Chukhung village from the trail to Island Peak (2012)
Chukhung village from the trail leading do Island Peak

Chhukhung is a small village in Khumbu with a fabulous variety of additional spellings such as Chuukung and Chukhung. It is located at 4,730 metres above sea level.

Understand[edit]

Chhukhung is located at the foot of Island Peak Mountain (see Island Peak Trek)

Get in[edit]

Normally from Lukla to Chhukhung it takes seven days, including the two days of acclimatization in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche.

Get around[edit]

See[edit]

Do[edit]

A popular trip is up the 5,546-metre Chhukung Ri, it takes about 6 hours return.

Buy[edit]

There are no stores in the village, but the lodges keep a stock of necessities, such as camera film, batteries, throat lozenges, bandages etc. - but remember that prices rise along with the altitude - and Chhukhung is pretty high!

Eat[edit]

Drink[edit]

Sleep[edit]

  • Panorama Lodge has a great sun-room with views over the valleys and mountains beyond, and the facilities are exceptionally clean and well-maintained.

Go next[edit]

There are several options depending on how many days are left before the flight back to Kathmandu. One of them is to go back to Dingboche and from there take the trail that goes up to Everest Base Camp. Or from Dinboche taking the trail that leads to Gokyo.
