English: I would think reservoir is more correct than lake as it is man made. It took a long time to get a streetview but [/photos/91549360@N03/ OwenMacC] seems to have gotten it nearly spot on, thanks Owen.


Before this reservoir was built most drinking water in Dublin was taken from the Canals and it was not a very suitable supply, whereas the water from the Vartry was soft and sweet.

Sir John Gray, him of the statue in O'Connell Street and at one time the owner of the Freeman's Journal, was instrumental in having the waterworks located in Roundwood.

He died at Bath in England on 9 April 1875. Shortly after his death, his contributions to the provision of the water supply, and the beneficial impact this had to conditions of public health in Dublin, were recognised in a memorial statue on O'Connell Street.
