@SelfieCity: Perhaps you might want to consider doing the cropping on Commons so that proper attribution works? The banners can be copied here if and when they get selected for the front page. Until then, the ones under consideration can easily stay on Commons. Even better, you'll be able to use Commons' CropTool, which handles attribution for you. Sure, I'll try it after we finish this discussion here, if it's necessary. Normally I use GIMP to crop images and I find it works pretty well, but in cases like this, Commons is useful. However, the real problem is that the template used in Commons for attribution in this case is not your average template, and it does not exist anywhere on WV and therefore will not work. If it was added to MediaWiki:Licenses, however, there would not be an issue. Could you possibly do that? It's {{PD-Gottlieb}}. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 01:38, 25 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
I really don't think we should be having these images here. Honestly, we shouldn't have any PD or CC licenses listed at all; the only files allowed here under EDP are fair-use copyrighted files. Main page features are here by de facto policy out of potential for vandalism, but they should be deleted once they are no longer on the main page, and so we don't really need effort put into QOL/convenience features to make them easier to upload. The current solution works fine temporarily, I'd say. ARR8 (talk | contribs) 01:42, 25 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
I see, but at the same time there should be no legal trouble with anything in the public domain, right? If we choose this picture for our front page, which is where consensus is going currently, we might as well post it. I'd be fine, though, with old DOTM banners should be deleted, as long as they are not in the DOTM banners hall of fame. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 01:49, 25 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Keep in mind that the images would still be on Commons, so they can stay in the Hall of Fame just fine without being uploaded here. The same applies for banners which are under consideration and have been chosen, but are not yet on the front page. Attribution should be fine as-is.
