Goranboy is a town in the south west of Azerbaijan, in the Ganja Region.

Goranboy has about 8000 inhabitants. It is 350 km from Baku. Goranboy means a place situated near Goran river.

History[edit]

Goranboy history has changed much throughout its history. The treaty that divided Azerbaijan was signed in Gulustan village of Goranboy. Goranboy is bordered in the north-east by yevlax, in the south-west by Kelbecer, in the north-west by Samux, in the south-east by Terter, and in west by Xanlar region. During the 1930s this district had two cities. They were Goranboy, Delimemmedli and 4 settlements, it also had 79 villages. This region was created on 8 August 1930 by the new decision by lower Aghjikend by the Azerbaijan SSR centre committee. Then in 1938, with new decision Goranboy's name had changed and was called Qasim Ismayilov, the lower Agcakend region was called Shaumyan village. In 1930 this region was separated from Aghjikend forming the Lower Agcakend. During 1963-1965 parts of Yevlax Region became under the administration of Goranboy. On 12 February in 1991, a new decision was adopted this decision was declared that there was no need for a division of the region in same area. That is why the former region of Shaumyan was eliminated. Already Goranboy region is entered Ganja economical region's commercial.

  • Winter – In the winter Goranboy is cold. In January and February it sometimes snows.
  • Spring – In Springtime Goranboy is beautiful. The weather is cool in early March, in April it is rainy. But in May the weather is hot.
  • Summer – Summer is very hot. It is very dry, but sometimes it is raining.
  • Fall – The weather is changeable in Fall. Many times it is raining. But sometimes it is sunny.

  • A burial mounds in Goranboy in Safikurd village. It situated in 15 km of village. It is 2,000 years old. During the excavations the they found jugs chains rings and etc. and now those all are kept in Goranboy history museum.
  • There is a Shatal City in goranboy region in the village of Rahimli.it is situated in south east of village. It belongs to middle centuries. The longest of castle is 700 m, the area is 40 ha, the meaning of shatal means happiness. The remainders of the city are still protected by the government. If you want to go to that place you can get on the bus going to ganja.
  • There are many mosques here. The people living here are Muslims. One of them is in Qizilhajili village. It is from the 18th and 19th centuries. In places they say that it has been built in 18 t centuries but in some origins they say that it has been built by Muhammad in 1861 year. During 1937 years it has been used as a grain bin, but then it was destroyed. But it has rebuilt again 1984.
  • There are also many temples here. One of them is in Borsunlu. This temple belongs to the 13th centuries. There are remainders of this temple and it is protected by the government. If you want go there you can get on the bus going to Ganja. It will take you there.
  • There is a history museum in the center of the city. Many things reflecting Goranboy's history are kept there. Open 10:00-18:00.
  • There is a HAYDAR ALIYEV museum located in central Goranboy, open from 09:00-18:00.
