Comments[edit]

How can the parenthetical name "Pakistan" be removed from the title of this Wikivoyage article? The title should be simply "Northern Areas" or "Northern Areas (Kashmir)."

We are not interested in political disputes -- not because we don't care, but because we need to describe what a traveler will need to cope with in real life at this time. Since the Northern Areas are currently controlled by Pakistan, we describe this area as part of Pakistan. -- (WT-en) Colin 18:58, 22 July 2008 (EDT)

Move this article[edit]

It seems that the Northern Area was officially renamed as Gilgit Baltistan in August 2009 [1] [2]. Given the political sensitivities about this part of the world, I thought it best to discuss this here before moving the article to Gilgit Baltistan and putting a redirect in place. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 12:47, 5 November 2009 (EST)

See Project:Article naming conventions. We do not automatically use Official Names, but if the Official Name is useful and/or is now being used by travelers routinely, then yes we should rename. I don't have an opinion on this -- just trying to provide guidance. -- (WT-en) Colin Jensen 13:37, 5 November 2009 (EST)
I definitely want this article to be renamed. Northern Area means nothing, it is a misleading term. Pakistani and International media uses the term Northern Area for all the areas under conflict in Pakistan i.e. Swat, Malakhand, Tribal areas which leads to People/tourists thinking Gilgit-Baltisan also being part of the conflict zone. which is definitely not the case. In fact Gilgit-Baltisan is the only safe place in Pakistan at the moment. Sajude. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 82.22.158.12 (talkcontribs)
As best as I can read the map, the Official Name (tm) is the sensible choice here, as it involves no changes in boundaries actual or claimed. The name change is recent enough that both names are in frequent use in English, but already Gilgit-Baltistan is leading NA or FANA by about 2:1 in recent news media, suggesting that it already qualifies as the most commonly used name. I'd say a rename and redirect are in order. - (WT-en) Dguillaime 01:34, 19 November 2009 (EST)
...which I've now done. - (WT-en) Dguillaime 15:15, 22 November 2009 (EST)

Bad map[edit]

We need to eliminate the cross-hatching from this map and show only the region itself. Showing the Pakistani claims to Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir is inflammatory to Indians and confusing to travellers. Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:32, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regions section[edit]

This section currently has extremely long descriptions, but the normal default style is to use Wikivoyage:One-liner listings leaving the details to the linked articles. I am not sure we need to chop them down to one-liners, but I do think we need to move some distance in that direction. Pashley (talk) 13:01, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. That's really too much dense black text to be user-friendly. Ikan Kekek (talk) 13:18, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, but unfortunately I'm not good at writing brief intros so it would be kind if someone write descriptions for both divisions please. --Saqib (talk) 13:29, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think removing the "practical" info (eg, what regions are to the north/east/south/west, major cities, all district names, how long drives are, etc) and just focussing on "exciting" stuff, like the major reasons for going there, will make the descriptions much better. James Atalk 13:41, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I shortened them a lot, approximately along the lines JamesA suggested. It is still not near the one-liner criterion, though. Pashley (talk) 16:46, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Pashley, regionlist template is being used in this article so I guess one-liner listings shouldn't apply here. --Saqib (talk) 17:56, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think the general idea should apply, though it is not a hard-and-fast rule for any type of listing.
In particular, I want to delete some of the text you just added with edit comment "Copied from WP". I'd keep "Location of some of the highest mountains on Earth including K-2.", but I'd take this out:
Baltistan is bestowed with some of the greatest bounties of Nature. Tourists from all over the world have a great attraction toward this region because of its beautiful valleys, plains, peaks and heritage sites.
There's an English error, "bestowed with", and I think a factual error — does Baltistan actually have any "plains"?
More important, this sort of text does not, I think, belong in a listing. Perhaps in the Baltistan article or even in the lead section of this one, explaining why one might vist Gilgit-Baltistan. Not here.

"Emergency numbers" section in "Connect"[edit]

I think this section is a little Yellow Pagey, that some of the listings are obscure (What are I.G., A.I.G., and S.S.P.?), and that some (like the PIA numbers) belong in a listing in another section (in that case, "Get in").

Is there any way we could put a single emergency number in this section, or at most, one for the police, one for fire departments, and one for an ambulance? Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:08, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. The section is superfluous. I've removed all redundant numbers and put only one number "1122" which can be used incase of any kind of emergency such as "Police, Fire Department and Ambulance". I.G stands for inspector general, AIG for Additional inspector general and SSP for Senior Superintendent Police. --Saqib (talk) 11:44, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
