Glasgow Wikimedia Meetup Number 1[edit]

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I have not seen this advertised on Wikivoyage so here goes:

A chance to meet up with people from various Wikimedia projects on Sunday 12th May 2013. 1.00 pm onwards in The Sir John Moore, 260-292 Argyle Street, Glasgow G2 8QW (A Wetherspoons pub with food and WiFi). For more details see: Meta:Meetup/Glasgow/1. AlasdairW (talk) 20:25, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The core underlying principle of Wikivoyage is that it is written for the benefit of travellers. The question "what is best for the traveller" should always guide edits made here.

Perhaps our most "sacred" principle (that some Wikivoyagers are in danger of losing sight of) is that all our work aims foremost to serve the travellers who are our readers.

I'm not sure that this edit observes that fundamental principle.

The editor in question has form for these kind of lazy edits. He has a predilection for fixed image sizes rather than leaving it to the preference of the reader as is advised on other wikimedia projects that use the same software, but that shouldn't be an excuse for changing URLs to those of non-existent bus companies or having visitors from Edinburgh or wider afield think that they do not have to hail buses from bus stops in Glasgow! --W. Franke-mailtalk 19:59, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Frank, just stick to editing those other things, and lay off the proportional image sizes, which you know haven't been agreed to. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:24, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Glasgow School of Art[edit]

It looks like GSoA will be posting to http://www.gsa.ac.uk/about-gsa/key-information/mackintosh-building-fire/ to provide its students with info regarding the recent fire. (Admittedly, their first priority is students, not travellers.) The WV Glasgow#Architecture will likely need to be updated if and when anything is reopened to the public. 2001:5C0:1400:A:0:0:0:20D 22:22, 23 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Districtification (continued)[edit]

There has been an attempt (in 2009) to districtify Glasgow (see Talk Archive). This seems a reasonable thing to do and from the archived discussion, an existing boundary definition including map could be taken. I think this should be done - any objections? 3 December 2014 (UTC)

Restaurant chain[edit]

I moved this food listing to the discussion page, because I think it doesn't give any useful information. Feel free to add it back, but please provide more details, e.g. reasons why people should go there:

  • Zizzi. They have two restaurants: 2nd Floor, Princes Square, 48 Buchanan Street in the city centre [1], and 8 Cresswell Lane in the West End [2].

Alternative banner for this article?[edit]

Banner currently used in this article
Suggested new alternative banner

I created a new alternative banner for this article (I initially created it first and foremost so that it would be used at the top of the parallel article in the Hebrew edition of Wikivoyage, yet I later decided to also suggest that the English Wikivoyage community would consider using it here as well). So, which banner do you prefer having at the top of this article? ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 04:49, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Both are nice, and I'm torn, but perhaps #2 would be better since it still shows that building. – Hshook (talk) 13:57, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Keep. Not a significant improvement. Danapit (talk) 18:39, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Like Hshook, I'm torn. The building is interesting and the cityscape is beautiful. As there clearly won't be a consensus for a change, is there another article where the cityscape would be appropriate? Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:03, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the present view of the Armadillo is slightly better. Also bear in mind that we have a panorama on Clydeside the next level up in the hierarchy. AlasdairW (talk) 22:32, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Keep for sure --Andrewssi2 (talk) 23:42, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
How do you all compare the current banner for Clydeside with this banner? I'm not sure, because the current banner there has an interesting modernist character and a good composition, while the proposed new banner here is fairly pretty but more conventional. I'd be hard-pressed to recommend substituting this banner there, either. Also, the source image for the proposed replacement banner is extremely dark, so I'm not sure how it would look as a thumbnail in an article. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:57, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Just to clarify my comment above - I am not suggesting changing the banner on Clydeside, but my point is that the view of one building contrasts with the panoramic view in the level above. The new banner could be used on Driving tour of Scotland which currently has the same banner as Fort William. AlasdairW (talk) 22:27, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea, because the same banner shouldn't be used for 2 articles. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:59, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
#3 Glasgow city centre view from The Lighthouse viewing platform
#4 Glasgow George Square
I'm definitely in favour of replacing the existing (Armadillo) banner. The image quality is quite bad and it's too colourless to represent the Glasgow page. Plus, if you don't know the building it is hard to recognize anything on that picture. (A new higher quality version of the same motif but cropped with more of the surrounding area might be acceptable). I created two more alternatives (#3 and #4) which have a slightly better image quality and show more of Glasgow. I would vote for #3. (But in general there is still room for improvement for a better banner.) Thanks in any case for your suggestions. dom (talk) 12:34, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
With the caveat that I have yet to visit Glasgow, I don't find the two newest banners very compelling, because: The first one, aside from the "PEOPLE MAKE GLASGOW" sign, has mostly not-too-interesting buildings in a gray sky, whereas the second one has some interesting buildings and might be good if their tops weren't cut off in a way that looks random. I don't find either composition that good. I hope none of this comes across as discouraging. Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:46, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I notice that the second new one looks better as a small thumbnail on this page than it would as a pagebanner, but it needs to be judged in pagebanner size. Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:48, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Time formatting[edit]

This article uses both of our time formats: 09:00-17:00 and 9AM-5PM. Per WV:TDF, we should pick one and stick with it. With one is most commonly used in Glasgow? Ground Zero (talk) 12:36, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalisation[edit]

The Glasgow Subway is a proper noun, and must be capitalised. "The subway" is not a proper noun, per our policy on capitalisation -- see Wikivoyage:Capitalization: "Generic words for institutions, organizations, companies, etc., do not take capitals (University of Mumbai but the university)."

As far as Imax goes, that company can capitalise its name however it wants for promotional purposes, but I don't know why Wikivoyage would want to. We don't have a policy on that, however, so I'll leave that alone. Ground Zero (talk) 14:17, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia capitalises IMAX, because that's the way it's normally spelt, so that's why Wikivoyage should do so too.
SPT (the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport who run the Subway) also capitalise the S of Subway, just as we capitalise Tube, U-Bahn and Métro (the Paris Métro, not metros in general). You'll notice that I left generic mentions of (other) subway networks with a lower case S, as per policy. ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 14:37, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Corporate styling preferences and Wikipedia policy are neither here nor there as this is Wikivoyage, and we follow Wikivoyage style. The fact that other articles don't follow this style is also not a relevant argument. But I'm not looking to fight about this. I'm moving on to other work. Regards, Ground Zero (talk) 20:16, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You do that. Nobody's "fighting", least of all me. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 09:13, 4 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
