External links & Travelpod content[edit]

I removed several external links to non-primary sites and some Wikipedia articles (see Project:External links and Project:Links to Wikipedia) and some content that was quoted from travelpod.com - it was credited to the original source, but it seems questionable whether the CC-SA license would allow using quotes to fill out full sections of information. The rest of the information looks OK to me, and this is a great start of an article for a new contributor. -- (WT-en) Ryan 16:11, 19 March 2006 (EST)

Dear Ryan, thanks for the guidance re the Ibo article. Can you indicate the reason why links to personal accounts of travels is against WikiTravel policy? It was certainly useful to me to read such accounts from earlier travellers to Ibo, and I would think other users of WikiTavel will similarly benefit. I have enriched the article itself from relevant information from these accounts, but that is not the same as the personal account itself. It is primary material, although of course not official. The external links policy explains the reasons for limiting external links fairly well, but a summary is that 1. we don't want Wikivoyage to become a link farm, and 2. many people simply add a link to an article rather than adding content, which doesn't really help make the article much better. I agree that your links to the journals were interesting (I actually read through some of them), and if you want to list those links on this talk page with a note that they're good resources about the island, that's fine, but for the actual article itself the policy is clear: only official links for hotels, attractions, restaurants, and the offical site of Ibo are allowed. If you disagree with that policy feel free to make your argument on Project:External links. Thanks for the contributions! -- (WT-en) Ryan 02:48, 23 March 2006 (EST)
