Reading on Newcastle[edit]

A good article for further research - [1] - (WT-en) Ctbolt 19:25, 17 February 2007 (EST)

Article Clean Up[edit]

I'm going to attempt to plunge forward and update this article a fair bit.

To begin, I've removed a couple of very outdated entries:

  • <do name="Newcastle Regional Museum" address="787 Hunter Street Newcastle West" phone="02 4974 1400" email="" fax="" hours="" price="" url="">Open 10AM - 5PM Tuesday to Sunday (also open Monday in school and on public holidays). Free admission.</do>
  • <listing name="Honeysuckle Markets" address="Merewether Street, Newcastle" phone="4927 5366" email="" fax="" hours="" price="" url="http://www.honeysucklemarkets.com.au/">Held every Sunday from 9AM-3PM, feature produce, art and crafts from the Newcastle region.</listing>

Newcastle Regional Museum is being re-established where the Honeysuckle Markets were once held, but work seems to be happening rather slowly so I think it can be left out of the article entirely for the time being.

I'm new at this - so please let me know if I'm doing something wrong! --(WT-en) Influink 09:09, 6 March 2010 (EST)

Looks good so far! (WT-en) Texugo 09:15, 6 March 2010 (EST)

Replacement banner?[edit]

I'm against replacing banners when the existing banner is acceptable, but I happen to be in Newcastle today and took the proposed shot by the beach.

Existing
Proposal: One I took this evening

I think the existing banner has some sort of stretched panoramic effect which I don't really like, and also doesn't show many features.

My proposed version has a higher resolution, shows the nice coastal road and 'seems' higher quality to me. Andrewssi2 (talk) 10:19, 18 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'll go ahead and do this for the reasons stated above. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 20:27, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Districify article?[edit]

I am proposing that we add districts to Newcastle. Currently, the only Australian non state capital that has districts is the Gold Coast, but I think it's time to break up Newcastle as well. Not only is this getting too big, but this is also getting biased towards the city centre. You can even see that the 16km freeway (A37) that runs through from north to south is nowhere to be seen on the map. If we gain some consensus, I'll try and find out some borders of the districts, but IMO, this is well long overdue. Newcastle also goes quite far south, and I think up to Belmont, so it is a fair bit south. (for those who don't know where, just zoom out of the map and go a bit south and you'll find it. It's 2021 population is also ≈450000, so making it the 7th largest city in Australia.

Any thoughts, ideas, or supports, or opposes?

I'd tend to trust you, but about how many listings would you expect there to be in each district? Perhaps you should decide on borders for your proposed districts first? Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:55, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Minimum 20 in each district. For the first bit, Newcastle/City Centre would be the first one. The second one is already present, and that is Maitland (New South Wales). I'm still doing some research, and I'll ask some locals from Newy to see what they say. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 04:19, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good to me. Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:22, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Also, would do we have articles such as Newcastle (New South Wales)/City Center, or will we have to make the disambiguation into Newcastle (disambiguation) and the Newcastle (New South Wales) page into Newcastle? As far as I know, the Newcastle in the UK and Canada isn't that notable compared to Newcastle NSW. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 04:33, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There are lots and lots of places called Newcastle or New Castle, but I don't think any is as big as this one. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:25, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Plenty in the US and the UK. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 05:31, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There are also such places in other languages: Neuchâtel, Castelnuovo Berardenga. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:34, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
So here's what I found and am proposing:
  Newcastle/City Centre
Newcastle/West Newcastle (Wallsend, Cameron Park, Elermore Vale, Jesmond)
Newcastle/South Newcastle (Belmont, Charlestown, Pelican and Swansea)
Newcastle/North West Newcastle (Maitland (New South Wales), Hexham (New South Wales), Beresfield)
I think this is enough. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 03:40, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm also moving this page to Newcastle since no other Newcastle is as big as this one. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 03:41, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
My mistake: Newcastle upon Tyne is bigger. How do we handle that? Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:07, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That has a population of 250k, but this has 400k, so this is still bigger. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 04:33, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
From this article: The second largest city in the state of NSW and sixth largest in Australia, Newcastle city had a population of 153,000 and the suburban area of over 500,000. From Newcastle upon Tyne: It has a population of 250,000 but including the surrounding urban area its population is almost 1 million. Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:55, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
150,000 is just the city centre, and not greater Newcastle to my understanding. Here's a source of the current population. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 05:21, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
even have a look at w:en:List of cities in Australia by population SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 05:22, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. And at w:Newcastle upon Tyne#Population: According to the ONS, Newcastle had a population of 293,000 in 2015.[215] Tyneside (made up of Newcastle and the surrounding metropolitan boroughs of Gateshead, North Tyneside and South Tyneside) has a population of approximately 880,000, making it the eighth most populous urban area in the UK.[216] The wider metropolitan area of Tyneside-Wearside has a population of approximately 1,122,000. I think we need to have a wider discussion in order to come to a decision about whether either Newcastle is overwhelmingly more prominent than the other. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:39, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion, I don't mind which Newcastle dominates over others. But to me, it seems odd having Newcastle (New South Wales)/City Centre. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 06:30, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── reviving this, but, I might put this on hold until after Sydney is featured on the main page. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 07:27, 10 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This long later, I've finally managed to workaround a solution to this. Instead of having various districts to Newcastle as a whole, I've incorporated a "Greater Newcastle" section on Hunter#Regions, and if the Hunter region does ever require subregions, those four articles can be moved to Greater Newcastle (currently a redirect). This is, in my opinion, better than having city + districts. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 10:12, 24 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Move this (back) to Newcastle (New South Wales)?[edit]

I am proposing to move Newcastle (disambiguation) to the slot occupied by this article, i.e. Newcastle. This city's article would then be moved to Newcastle (New South Wales).

This is just a notification so that interested editors may know of and give their opinion on the proposal. I have made my argument at Talk:Newcastle (disambiguation) and invite you to leave a comment there.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 13:54, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
