Talk:Route 1 (Iceland)

This may be a controversial page for Wiki but I have created it for a few reasons. First, Route 1 is the only major road of Iceland (thus covering the "get around" section for many cities). Second, because Route 1 is the only major road in Iceland, one should be prepared of hazardous conditions and being stranded on the road. Third, most of the national parks/glaciers are off of Route and it important to know how far they are from cities. If you have any questions, please post or send me a talk. -(WT-en) Blacksapphire 16:23, 11 Oct 2006 (PST)

I see no problem with this as an Project:Itineraries article. Check out Project:Itinerary article template to see how we'd like it formatted. -- (WT-en) Colin 21:43, 11 October 2006 (EDT)

I place the link to the Traffic Council to guide people who need more detailed information as well as a listing of every road sign used in the country. Due to copyright, placing and explaning those signs on this Wiki article is not beneficial. The Traffic Council brochure has a better coverage of this information.-(WT-en) Blacksapphire

The route[edit]

According to WP, the road does not pass through the Northwestern peninsula. This map shows one place on said peninsula. Who's right? Hobbitschuster (talk) 13:21, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WP I suppose. See the map and accompanying prose in Driving in Iceland#Roads, which also exclude the peninsula. Also Húsavík and Blue Lagoon are included in this article, although the map shows them as requiring sidetrips. --LPfi (talk) 20:28, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bike advice[edit]

I think if we're gonna list a bike in "get in" we should give some more advice as to pitfalls. I am pretty sure there's basically no bike repair shop outside greater Reykjavík and spare parts will be hard to get to. Is that so? Hobbitschuster (talk) 15:35, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming of Title[edit]

I am thinking of changing the title of this article to Iceland Route 1 or Iceland(ic) Ring Road, or Route 1 (Iceland). For one, most medias outside the Wikimedia sphere use either of these terms, so this title is seemingly not catchy enough. For two, it looks redundant to me by writing it with two terms that refer to one single ring road. Suggestions welcome. Othello95 (talk) 07:45, 3 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What rally driver wrote this?[edit]

From Understand:

"Finished in 1974, it is 1,332 km (828 mi) long and goes through its assorted topographical features: fjords, mountains, flat lands."

"Although it practically takes only 12 hours to drive along the road non-stop"...

It would mean an average speed of 111 km/h, so you would be ignoring the speed limits mentioned in the Driving section (90, 80 and 50 km/h) throughout. Now even if there were no speed limits, I somehow can't believe you can safely keep an average speed that high, even if there per the photos of the road on Commons are some straight sections on the road with views of several kms in all directions where you could drive a bit faster to compensate for slower driving on the curvier, hilly sections.
