I removed the comment about relative safety of the two neighborhoods. For one thing, it seemed to promote a view that because the neighborhood retained more of its BLACK ROOTS that made it LESS SAFE. ahem. Sound a little racist? Both areas have had their problems -with Upper Haight problems resulting in the passage of the Sit/Lie law in San Francisco. There have been also plenty of muggings, robberies, and murders around Golden Gate Park, much related to the homeless problem there (or, actually, some of the people aren't really homeless, they're temporarily in town, camping out and selling the marijuana harvest).
