At that time, one of China's great leader, Deng Xiao Ping, plan to test his idea of opening the China. Some of his advisor told him to start with Shanghai, one of few big cities in China. But Deng thinks that if you want to make a painting, it is better to start from the scratch than modified exsisting one. So Deng choose the small fishing village near the economic giant, Hongkong.

Start from the scratch, they draw roads, tunnels, economic area, etc. Deng send the army to build the village. It took Deng only 15 years to create new big city in China. Shenzhen is the success story for Deng's plan, then he implemented the same plan to other area in China.

It does not seem relevant for travellers.

I think it is useful background info, but the content could use a little copyediting. (WT-en) Jpatokal 03:05, 7 April 2006 (EDT)
I think the information is less than accurate.

Mention of Lonely Writers Publishing[edit]

Is in the first paragraph. Is this allowed? --(WT-en) MarinaK 20:31, 16 February 2009 (EST)MarinaK.

Edit war?[edit]

A paragraph about Shenzhen OCT company has been added several times in the "Understand" section, and I've deleted it each time. I did add a shorter mention of the company under "See"; I think that is all that is required. Other opinions?

Whoever is adding it, a much more useful thing to do would be to add some details in the listing for Happy Valley. Few travellers will have much use for a blurb on the company, but many probably want to know what Happy Valley offers, what prices are, and so on. (WT-en) Pashley 09:07, 24 September 2009 (EDT)

Map?[edit]

I'm not sure how to change this, but the map to Shenzhen subway is the projected map of 2011, not the current map, which only has two lines. Could someone change this?

Can't see why anybody would want to change this. The new lines will all be up before the end of 2010. Actually I notice that there is a line missing.

Full Chinese issued at LoWu border?[edit]

The article mentions this, but does not say for which nationalities or the costs involved. Is it possible for US passport holders - they cannot get the Shenzhen 5 day visa.

Link to Botanical Gardens[edit]

Some one please add this link, I could not as it said someone was already editing it. Very strange. http://www.szbg.org/html/en/ <-- English description and map.

Alternative banner for this article?[edit]

old banner currently used in this article
suggested new banner (which is currently used in the parallel article in the Hebrew Wikivoyage)
Banner 3

In the Hebrew Wikivoyage we are currently using this banner instead of the one which is currently used here. Do you think too that this banner would would better than the existing one? ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 02:41, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The proposed new banner is far more striking here. Texugo (talk) 02:43, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's a fantastically colorful panorama. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:59, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, the existing banner could be anywhere. The proposed banner is actually what you see when flying over the city at night and very exciting to think what is down there. Andrewssi2 (talk) 06:33, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, new one is much better. Pashley (talk) 01:19, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I would go with the new banner. • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 20:18, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Newer banner Matroc (talk) 03:43, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Added a third banner to choose from. A bit better than the other two options in my opinion.--Renek78 (talk) 01:21, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I retract my 3 year old comment above. There must have been another banner that I was talking about.
That said, I personally don't think the new banner proposed is that compelling. It is a wider panoramic shot, but the old (existing) banner still gives me a better feeling of the city. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 05:29, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Please correct me if I'm misremembering, but as I recall, this article used to use a spectacular, colorful night view that was one of the very best on the site. What on Earth happened to it? Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:27, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think you are remembering correctly. There seems to have been a file called 'Shenzhen_Wikivoyage_banner.jpg' that no longer exists on MediaWiki. Possibly there was a copyright violation and it was removed, and User:Matroc returned it to the original (working) banner. Andrewssi2 (talk) 07:53, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That's a real shame! I haven't really visited this city (going across the border to Hong Kong in 1987 after taking a train from Guangzhou doesn't count), but for what it's worth, I like Banner #3 most. However, if Banner #1 is a fairer representation of the city, maybe it's best to keep it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:17, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The old file was deleted here and for those who are curious what we are talking about, a copy of it can be seen here. Ar2332 (talk) 18:58, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Promote to Guide?[edit]

It looks close to me, but I have not done any detailed checking.

Any volunteers to do that then either promote it or post here about what is needed to get it there? Pashley (talk) 17:27, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Convert to huge city?[edit]

Shenzen is a giant 10-20 million person city, shouldn't this article be converted into a Wikivoyage:Huge city article template with District pages? —The preceding comment was added by 184.75.115.98 (talkcontribs)

The huge city article template has more to do with the amount of content in an article than the actual size of a city (see Wikivoyage:Geographical hierarchy#Districts in cities). That said, the Shenzhen article is becoming fairly long, so if someone can propose a good district structure it would be worth considering how to split things into smaller pieces. -- Ryan • (talk) • 16:52, 6 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Shenzhen districts
It would be good to split up. Wikipedia gives us the official administrative regions here w:Shenzhen#Administrative_divisions of 11 districts which could be created. Obviously some of these new articles would be a little bare, but worth doing? --Andrewssi2 (talk) 21:09, 6 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think not worth doing. I think the page currently is of manageable size, and it would be of negative value to travelers to have to guess at which district a given attraction is in. Ar2332 (talk) 07:18, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree with your point completely Ar2332 . The whole purpose of district articles is to help inform the best locations for certain attractions so that they can plan better! Shenzhen covers a very large distance that is not realistic within one day, and is still expanding outwards as we speak. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 09:41, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Because of it size I would split into three districts. Inside of Beihuan Hwy and a couple of outer districts (east and west). Some of the outlining but still large districts would be regarding as cities by many people. I suggest first adding coordinated to all the listings, the map will then make it clearer were concentration of points of interest are. --Traveler100 (talk) 11:21, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree to Traveler100's suggested division. P.S. at what point do we decide we are indenting this thread too much, and what do we do then? Ar2332 (talk) 17:21, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Map
Map of Shenzhen

To the right is a first shot. City has been divided into "Center" "East" and "West". Any comments?--Renek78 (talk) 10:18, 23 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
My initial thought is that it's not enough districts, but I agree with the overall structure (center, east, and west). It's a shame that our coverage of the city is so sparse. For now, I'd say that at least Nanshan should be its own district. Someday, if our coverage improves, it may make sense to have a separate district article for each administrative district and multiple articles for Bao'an and maybe Nanshan and others. —Granger (talk · contribs) 11:54, 23 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm also not sure whether it makes sense to put Yantian together with the other eastern districts. Yantian was part of the original SEZ and therefore at least some people consider it part of the city center. But I haven't really been to Yantian (and haven't spent much time in eastern Shenzhen overall), so I'm not sure what makes the most sense. —Granger (talk · contribs) 12:29, 23 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Added Nanshan as separate district. Unfortunately I am not able to give much feedback. The closest I ever got to Shenzhen was Hongkong... --Renek78 (talk) 16:37, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for splitting out Nanshan. I've just spent a few minutes reading about Yantian online, and it seems some of the district's most important attractions are the beaches. Given that, I'm leaning towards thinking it makes sense to group it in the east. But I'm still not sure. —Granger (talk · contribs) 00:16, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── An update: I went to Yantian for a short daytrip. The feel was more "suburbs" than "downtown", which gives me a little more confidence that putting it in the east district makes sense.

Here are some descriptions for the districts:

  • Center (Futian, Luohu) – Downtown Shenzhen: business, shopping, museums, performances, and a surprising array of parks and nature (including the tallest mountain in the city). The main border crossings with Hong Kong are in this area.
  • Nanshan – The trendy district and arguably the cultural center of Shenzhen. Nanshan contains the bulk of Shenzhen's amusement parks, the OCT–LOFT art center, Shenzhen University, Shekou ferry terminal and expat neighborhood, and a handful of historic sites.
  • West (Bao'an, Guangming, Longhua) – Largely residential and industrial, the sprawling suburbs near the airport also include some large, attractive parks and even farmland.
  • East (Yantian, Longgang, Pingshan, Dapeng) – This is where Shenzhen's natural beauty really shines through: mountains upon mountains and popular beaches, dotted with old Hakka villages.

As the article continues to expand, I think it's time to make this happen. This will also give us the space to go into more detail about Shenzhen's complicated array of border crossings and visa options, and to list more of the smaller attractions and out-of-the-way restaurants that feel a little out of place in an article about the whole city. Unless there are any last-minute objections, I'll implement this proposal sometime soon. —Granger (talk · contribs) 07:35, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I, for one, have no objections. STW932 (talk) 14:09, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've split out the districts. Anyone watching this page, please take a look at the article and the four new district articles and help clean up or point out any issues I've overlooked! —Granger (talk · contribs) 00:14, 13 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Lonely Planet ranking[edit]

I know Lonely Planet is well respected, but does it really make sense for us to mention another travel guide's recommendation as one of the top selling points of the city? It seems to me we should demonstrate the city's charms ourselves rather than repeating what another travel guide said. What do others think? —Granger (talk · contribs) 00:06, 23 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This kind of stuff is routinely deleted here. The point of external links#what not to link to's prohibition on linking other guides is to avoid mentioning them. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:26, 23 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata items for dynamic map[edit]

Below is the map with all Wikidata items for the districts. This should simplify the work in case we want to change the district set-up in the future. The tool Wikidata Extractor has been used to create the mapshapes.--Renek78 (talk) 10:29, 23 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Map of Shenzhen

This is a little out of date—as of 2018, Guangming is now its own administrative district. See w:Shenzhen#Administrative divisions and w:Guangming District for details. I'll comment on the suggestion up above in a few minutes, but I just wanted to mention this before I forget. —Granger (talk · contribs) 11:18, 23 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Updated it in OSM. Should be up-to-date now.--Renek78 (talk) 16:33, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Missing metro lines[edit]

Some metro lines are missing from the dynamic map. At least lines 3 and 5 seem to be missing, maybe others too. I don't know how to fix this – does anyone else? —Granger (talk · contribs) 01:49, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Also line 7 and line 9. The map is missing about half of the metro system. —Granger (talk · contribs) 08:38, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The data has to be edited on OpenStreetMap. You draw a line on OpenStreetMap, which must be part of a relation with attributes "type=route" and "route=subway" and "wikidata=####" where #### is the Wikidata item for this subway line (e.g. Wikidata item Q5939429=Shenzhen Line 9). Here is a working example. One complication is that in China, some OpenStreetMap mappers like to make multiple relations of "type=route" (e.g. one for eastbound trips, one for westbound trips, or else separate relations for branches of a line) and make them all members of another relation of "type=route_master" with the Wikidata item attached to this relation. Last time I checked, Wikivoyage was unable to generate the line drawing in this case. It might be worth getting this issue brought up on a Wikivoyage technical forum, to create a general fix for it.
