Help!! Too much white space![edit]

This might just be my browser being a bit stoopid, but theres a huge blank white patch between the intro paragraph and the contents box. I've tried playing around with moving the map to see if that was making this big space appear, but it doesnt seem to work! Ive noticed alot of the other pages don't have this, and was wondering if anyone could tell me how to get rid of it, if it is at all possible to... Thanks! (WT-en) Tim 20:11 6/3/06

I'm not seeing this in Firefox. (WT-en) Jonboy 15:17, 6 March 2006 (EST)

revert language[edit]

Tajik is a dialect of Persian, so I reverted it to "Tajik Persian" in the box. (WT-en) Cacahuate 12:35, 23 January 2007 (EST)

Travel warning[edit]

I believe Canada and the US have lifted travel warnings as of 15 March 08. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 202.137.241.44 (talkcontribs)

Regions[edit]

We can do better than the current regions scheme. Here's my suggestion:

These all conform to the administrative divisions, which isn't something we always want, but I think it would work fine here. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 23:33, 12 January 2010 (EST)

Better yet, split Sughd into Ferghana Valley (Tajikistan) and Zeravshan. The latter would encompass the wikipedia:Sughd#Southern_districts_of_Sughd. The Zervashan article will be a little sparse, but it has the Fann Mountains and Panjakent, so there is legitimate travel content to write about. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 00:04, 13 January 2010 (EST)
I was a little pessimistic about the odds of someone else joining this discussion, so I've plunged forward, and it is done. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 19:13, 14 January 2010 (EST)
Sorry for jumping into the discussion a little late, but I propose just one simple change: the name of the "Pamir" region. In just about everything I've read, the region is referred to as the GBAO. The problem is that Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province is a bit long for a region name, but I'm not sure an acronym is appropriate either(perhaps use the full name for the region and acronym on the map and in the article). My thought along this line is that not only are tourists more likely to encounter GBAO in reference to the region (especially for GBAO travel permits), it also emphasises that this is an autonomous region...it is difficult to access, this is where the civil war was in full swing, its history is a bit different than the rest of the country (Badakhshan also signifies its relationship with the neighboring areas of Afghanistan), and—while still Tajiks—its people seem more closely related to the Afghans than the peoples of Dushanbe & the Ferghana Valley. Perhaps I'm over-thinking this a bit, but there should be some emphasis that this is a very different region than the rest of the country. What do you think? At the very least the name should be Pamirs...the mountains are the Pamirs and I think without the "s" it just looks bizarre. (WT-en) AHeneen 06:29, 22 June 2010 (EDT)
Agree with Pamirs – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 21:29, 22 June 2010 (EDT)
Putting emphasis on the sharp division between east and west in Tajikistan is a good bit for the region descriptions or intro, I'd say, but I'm fine with changing the name to Pamirs, and will dohave done so. ---(WT-en) Peter Talk 22:07, 22 June 2010 (EDT)

2023 revisit[edit]

13 years later, here's a snapshot of the number of articles categorised underneath each region:

Content wise, most region articles are somewhat empty – the sole two exeptions are Pamirs and Zeravshan, which have most sections filled out.

I'm on the fence here – on one hand, most of the region articles suck and the boundaries mean merging/combining region articles isn't feasible, but Pamirs and Zeravshan are too good to completely abolish the regions. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 11:49, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think we're kind of stuck with these regions. I've tried to build them out with content from Wikipedia, even if they don't have destination articles. Ground Zero (talk) 01:22, 29 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I tend to agree. If we were to sell a paperback on the country, we should make the division match the content, but here on the wiki we should admit that our coverage is incomplete and aim for the time when somebody has something more to write about it, and facilitate those additions. A clear logical region structure helps. Without the regions, we give the impression that only the most important destinations in the country are to be covered. With regions, one can more easily add an article on some less important place one happened to like, perhaps one that would be the prime destination of a later reader. –LPfi (talk) 06:52, 29 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Do we need to divide into regions at all? I count only 11 low level destination articles which is fewer than the number within many existing regions on the wiki. --Comment by Selfie City (talk) (contributions) 16:20, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There are now 15 articles, and 4 of 5 region articles (except Karategin) have content beyond a list of destinations. I think the regional breakdown is useful. Ground Zero (talk) 13:24, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great! That's definitely a significant improvement so I don't think we need to make any changes to the region hierarchy anymore. --Comment by Selfie City (talk) (contributions) 15:41, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed; thanks for improving the various region articles in addition to creating many new ones! --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 22:28, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think one reason the region list has been so spartan is the general lack of tourism to Tajikistan. I'm moving to the country in the middle of the month so I can slowly start filling out more about the regions over the next year as I spend time in them. Tuyuhun (talk) 17:15, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Tuyuhun: First-hand information would be a really valuable addition to these articles. I look forward to reading more about this country I'd like to visit. Safe travels. Ground Zero (talk) 01:38, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ground Zero Having been in Tajikistan for about 3 months now, I think we should merge the Ferghana Valley and Zeravshan regional guides into a "Sughd" region. Those two Wikivoyage regions make up the official Sughd (Суғд, also spelled "Sugd") province of TJ.
If consensus says we shouldn't merge them, then we should at least make it clear on each page that these two Wikivoyage regions are one continuous region in TJ. Tuyuhun (talk) 10:41, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Tuyuhun, the official definitions don't much matter in Wikivoyage. We use whatever definitions are most useful for travellers, and we should identify the official provinces in the lead paragraphor Understandsection of the articles. Zeravshan has only two linked articles listed under it, and Ferghana Valley has only four, so there is an argument for merging them. On the other hand, the Zeravshan article has a lot of content, while the FV article has only a little. Have you thought about how the content could be merged to avoid treating FV as a "forgotten corner" of Sughd? Ground Zero (talk) 12:56, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I still think that there's enough overlap to merge them. I live in the FV portion right now and aside from Khujand and Istaravshan, there really isn't much in the valley that the standard traveler would find interesting (Isfara has some history but it's too far into a remote corner and near a disputed border for anyone to have a reason to go to it. Besides, most people would stay in Khujand one or two nights and use it as a launching point for further travels to either the Zeravshan Valley or to Tashkent; they wouldn't stay in it to explore the Tajik portion of the FV.
Maybe if we merge the two, but mention Khujand's role as a central node (and Istaravshan's history) in the region we could accomplish the merge without turning FV into the "forgotten corner". Tuyuhun (talk) 05:23, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Map on Tajikistan page[edit]

Swept in from the pub

Hello all. I noticed that on the country map on the Tajikistan page (the colored one with all the regions and major cities) the neighboring Chinese province of Xinjiang was misspelled "Xingjian". I don't have the necessary technological skills to fix that. Is there someone who has the requisite skills to fix that? (I apologize if this is the wrong platform to ask this but I don't know where else it would go.) Tuyuhun (talk) 22:28, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This page isn't too busy for anything you don't know a better place for.
The way to fix problems like this is to look up the SVG version, make the changes, generate a new PNG and upload both as new versions of the files at Commons. In easy cases like this you can just open the SVG in a text editor, search for the string, correct it, save and check that it worked as expected. In more complicated cases (where you need to adjust the position of the text), you may need an SVG editor unless you can figure out how to do it in the code.
I made the change, but for some reason I wasn't able to upload the new version (I might try later with a different browser or something). If somebody else does this, note also the line "xlink:href="file:///home/peterfitzgerald/...", which probably should be removed (I don't know how it missing or present affects anything).
LPfi (talk) 13:46, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Note that some text editors (notably Windows' default one, unless it has been corrected) mess with line breaks, add a byte order mark (which is illegal in many fixed-form text files) and possibly do other changes in addition to those requested. Use one that you trust or check the changes. –LPfi (talk) 13:50, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My Mac won't let me open the file for some reason, though. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 23:16, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Does it usually allow opening SVGs for editing? Otherwise you might need to specify a program to handle them. Alternatively, open it from the editor. Have you tried that? Or do Mac editors accept only files of certain types? You might be able to rename it to X.txt and edit that (the Mac filesystem has some other mechanism to keep track of file types, I don't know if it can be fooled that easily). –LPfi (talk) 14:41, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It usually does, but this one results in a error. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 22:05, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Currency notation[edit]

@Tuyuhun:, after seeing this edit, I am wondering what you think about changing our formatting standard noted at the top of this page from

"Please show prices in this format: TJS100, and not 100 somoni"

to

"Please show prices in this format: С100, and not TJS100, or 100 somoni."

Ground Zero (talk) 15:36, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If so, use "С" as in сомонӣ, not "C" as in comoni. –LPfi (talk) 11:14, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@LPfi:, in my browser, there is no perceptible difference between the two, either in read mode or in edit mode. Could you clarify this? Ground Zero (talk) 12:27, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
They look identical in most cases, but one is Cyrillic, the other Latin. I assume some browsers use different fonts for the two, in which case the difference will be visible. The choice of character may also affect automatic processing (such as searches and speech generators), where how they look isn't taken in account, only how they are coded. –LPfi (talk) 12:38, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've copied and pasted your С into the text above. I think many editors will just use C, though. Ground Zero (talk) 12:44, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Yes, probably. I don't know what we can do about that, other than regular search and replace. Somebody who indeed uses different fonts could do the corrections by hand. –LPfi (talk) 12:53, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ground Zero, LPfi: I've added the Cyrillic C to MediaWiki:Edittools, which means that it will always be there at the bottom of the edit screen. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 13:02, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm currently living in Tajikistan, and pretty much all price "signage" uses the Cyrillic letter С either before or after the value (the latter being about 2:1 times more common - like 100с). The symbol is also always lowercase. I think that we can change it if we change it to "Please show prices in this format: 100с, and not TJS100 or С100". Otherwise, the current system works, it's just a bit clunky when you start throwing decimals around. Tuyuhun (talk) 16:26, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, many people here simply write out сомонӣ (which doesn't really solve our conundrum). Tuyuhun (talk) 16:28, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The only issue with this is that the edit tools bar does not appear on mobile – all I see is white space (oh, please ignore that timer on top). Is there any way to get it to work? --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 13:08, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For the record, this was on Safari with iOS 17.3. I'm not sure if this is a browser issue (I only use Safari on mobile). --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 13:12, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Yes Done per this discussion. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 23:55, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've also changed every instance of "TJS" used into "С" (as in сомонӣ). --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 00:02, 29 January 2024 (UTC).[reply]

Fixing Tajikistan Map[edit]

I've noticed that there are some errors on the map we have for Tajikistan, and I don't have the technological skills to fix it myself. Whoever made the map misspelled Xinjiang as Xingjian, and in Uzbekistan the city of Namangan is named "Konibodom". Can someone with the required skills fix these please? Tuyuhun (talk) 08:06, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I had similar issues again at #Map on Tajikistan page. @SelfieCity:, when you have the time, could you fix this issue? --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 08:50, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, can someone officially rename Qurghonteppa to Bokhtar on the map while we're at it? Tuyuhun (talk) 14:31, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
