"City Centre" name

[edit]

So, is "City Centre" a proper name? --(WT-en) Evan 14:11, 27 Aug 2004 (EDT)

Probably not. (AFAIK The official names for the areas included are "West End", "Central Business District" and "Downtown Eastside") I suppose what your getting at is it should be moved to Vancouver/City Center (#&* American Spelling -- I hate that). But in accordance with the Policy I suppose that should be done. (I thought of it after I created it, but as it isn't exactly my favourite policy, I didn't bother changing it.)-- (WT-en) Webgeer 15:55, Aug 27, 2004 (EDT)
You got it right on. B-) Let's let it simmer for a while, and see how it comes out. I'm in no rush to change it -- I just noticed, and figured I should put a note here. --(WT-en) Evan 19:38, 27 Aug 2004 (EDT)

I think City Centre is ok, since most "downtown" areas in big cities have a similar title.

I would like to comment on the 'City Centre' name...no one actually uses that term. In Richmond maybe, but not Vancouver. It just referred to as the downtown area. Please don't use that either...You'll just look silly :) --24.85.136.113

Map

[edit]

OK, we have a map now. It still needs to have the annotations that match the guide added, but I want to wait till there are a few more entries in 'Drink'. Are there any more landmarks that should be added? I also plan to do a detail of Stanley Park, as I think there is enough interesting stuff there to warrant its own map, and it is something travellers will find useful. Vancouver Library

[edit]

Maybe this was an impressive library 20 years ago, but newer ones, in Montreal and Seattle for example, have set a new standard in central libraries. I removed the ridiculously arrogant line about VPL being the most modern and impressive, as it is clearly not to anyone who has travelled even a little in this world. Vancouver - get over yourself...you are so over-rated!!!!! --24.84.52.80 23:19, 2007 November 11

[edit]

I want to record for reference that the Backpackers Inn hotel is dis-recommended: "The so-called Backpackers Inn, a dilapidated four-storey Victorian building at 7 West Hastings St., is a 42-room drug bazaar where, a number of anonymous sources allege, violent crimes regularly occur." ("BC's Worst Drug Hotel Is About to Empty Out", By Monte Paulsen, The Tyee.ca, March 20, 2008) We don't list this hotel, and we shouldn't add it. We list two other Vancouver hotels with the word "backpacker" in their name, and I want to be sure people don't accidentally visit this one instead. The MoS advises against giving bad places bad reviews, instead we should just leave them out of the guide. I'm comfortable with that, unless we start hearing that travellers are having trouble by accidentally going to this hotel. (WT-en) JimDeLaHunt 14:39, 20 March 2008 (EDT)

city centre?

[edit]

I was wondering if this should be renamed Vancouver/City Centre. To spell Center like that is the American way, and this is a Canadian article. To me it seems out of place, you should care more about the dialect differences between Can and America. No offense. I just don't see why it's City Center when the proper way (for Canadian) is Centre. I know it would probably be fine on here because WT is American and they don't mind. But don't you think you should like in a way, praise Canadian dilect? I know it sounds silly. I don't know! I just think that it should be CITY CENTRE to keep with the Canadian spelling as Vancouver is apart of Canada. I am hoping to get a few comments on this. Keep smiling (WT-en) Edmontonenthusiast 11:58, 2 November 2008 (EST).

I'm really not in favour, our policy on local spellings notwithstanding. A Vancouver/City Centre page already exists (it redirects to here) so this can't be fixed simply by moving the page. I suspect we'd need admin intervention to action it. Someone would also have to fix all the links to the existing Vancouver/City Center page (about 15 or so). Personally, I don't think it's worth the hassle, it's not improving the article at all (Sorry EE, I don't think we should be praising that particular aspect of Canadian (British, actually) dialect!) (WT-en) Shaund 23:55, 2 November 2008 (EST)
Heh, alright. Just a thought. A lot of Canadian spelling is similar to British-cheque, centre, colour, verbal, capital...you get it! Keep smiling ,(WT-en) Edmontonenthusiast 00:22, 3 November 2008 (EST).

Downtown Map

[edit]

Is it just me or does the downtown map on the page need an upgrade? It's fine for viewing the road systems and/or where the geography is, but we need buy, eat, see/do, and hotel listings in there. To me that'd be more useful. I know bulliver isn't around, but I heard that you can have others edit it anyways. I could get in touch with PerryPlanet or someone else and get them to list stuff. I can gather all the information. I just want to see some opinions. Keep smiling, (WV-en) ee talk 14:25, 10 November 2008 (EST).

I agree the downtown map needs an upgrade. I downloaded the SVG file a while back and it's on my list of WT to-do projects. If someone else wants to take a crack at it, it's fine by me... one less city map to do :-) Although, one of the reasons I've held off doing it is because I know there are quite a few restaurants missing and some hotels (which I plan to add at some point). That, and I've wondered if the City Center district should be split up (it's a good size already and there is more info that could be added). (WT-en) Shaund 22:11, 10 November 2008 (EST)
Well you should probably update it-and when you get more information just add to it. I could help you out with it. I asked PerryPlanet, but he says he'll have to pass. He's pretty good, but oh well. Most of the other people who do maps have only done them for their cities (i.e. Sertmann, Peterfitzgerald). I don't know. Keep smiling, (WV-en) ee talk 22:39, 10 November 2008 (EST).

Areas to "see"

[edit]

I added areas to see section and maybe someone with good knowledge good add information! Keep smiling, (WV-en) edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 20:33, 26 November 2008 (EST).

Hmm, I'm not sure if I like an "Areas to see" section, some of it is already covered earlier (Gastown) and the CBD isn't really an area to see, its many attractions are covered as their own listings. Anyway, I'll let be for now and see how/if it develops. (WT-en) Shaund 01:25, 28 November 2008 (EST)

Too many sleep listings

[edit]

This article strikes me as having a surfeit of sleep listings. Since some of them lack basic pricing info, are chains (especially those chains that are serial Wikitravel touters), have touting descriptions, or lack descriptions at all, I think it might be worthwhile to trim the list. I know a lot of people have put a lot of work into the article, though, so I'm bringing up the idea in discussion first. If no objections, I'll try to remember to come back to this and trim the fat. --(WV-en) Peter Talk 01:59, 28 March 2009 (EDT)

I agree there are a lot of sleep listings here (and restaurants and activities), but I think it, in part, has to do with the ground it's covering. The district, as it's currently defined, covers off six neighbourhoods, of which four are among the most tourist-centric in the city. I'm working on a proposal to split the City Center district into two or three districts and so far, I've got one rough draft of a new (WV-en) West End district. Unfortunately, I don't have a draft of how the newly reduced City Center district will look, but I think it will help put a dent in the number of hotel listings.
That said, I fully agree the quality of some of the listings isn't up to snuff and need review. I'm hesitant to single out chains though; a quick look at Tripadvisor showed a number of them to be very highly rated so I'd prefer to check out internet reviews and clean up the descriptions and price info for many of the listings. (WT-en) Shaund 23:51, 31 March 2009 (EDT)
Update: There's a rough draft of the redefined (WV-en) City Center district ready. Still too many hotels and restaurants, so I agree some of the fat should go. I'll pick away at it over the next while. Suggestions are welcome! (WT-en) Shaund 23:55, 1 April 2009 (EDT)

New Downtown Districts?

[edit]
Existing Vancouver districts
Proposed Vancouver districts

I've been thinking about the City Center article for a while now and whether it's really getting the job done. It does a good job covering the main tourist points since the central business district and Stanley Park are well covered, but I think it glosses over the surrounding neighbourhoods -- the West End, Gastown, Chinatown, Yaletown -- and their attractions. It could be added to the existing City Center article, but at 63KB, I feel it's too long to add more info too. So, I'd like to propose splitting the City Center district into three:

  1. (WV-en) The West End and Stanley Park - beaches, neighbourhood restaurants, Davie Village and the big grand-daddy of Vancouver's parks, Stanley Park.
  2. (WV-en) CBD-Yaletown - the main business, shopping and entertainment areas of downtown
  3. (WV-en) Gastown-Chinatown - the tacky, derelict and eclectic original townsite. Gastown plays the role of tourist-friendly "old" Vancouver and Chinatown is the second (or third, depending on how you measure) largest Chinatown in North America.

I've put together articles on how the districts would roughly look (see links above). These are works in progress, particularly the Buy and Contact sections. What are people's thoughts?? -(WT-en) Shaund 01:24, 20 July 2009 (EDT)

When splitting districts, the main point of consideration is whether the new districts will be able to sustain good, complete travel articles. That you have already written good, complete travel articles for these proposed districts is very good evidence that your proposed split should be successful ;) I say move them into the article namespace the sooner the betterwhere end users will be able to find them. --(WV-en) Peter Talk 06:46, 20 July 2009 (EDT)
OK, the new districts are now up and ready to go. (WT-en) Shaund 14:40, 26 July 2009 (EDT)

Samba

[edit]

It looks like Samba is shut down since it's building is being torn down. Their website indicates they're looking for a new location, so I'm posting their listing here in case it opens somewhere else soon.

  • <eat name="Samba Brazilian Steakhouse" alt="" address="1122 Alberni St" directions="On the south side of Alberni St, near Thurlow St." phone="+1 604 696-9888" email="" fax="" url="http://www.sambasteakhouse.com/samba" hours="Mon–Fri 11:30am–3:00pm, 5:30pm–10:00pm; Sat–Sun 12:00pm–3:00pm, 5:50pm–10:00pm" price="$14-16 lunch; $29-32 dinner (rodizio), $22-29 (menu)">A great place for lovers of flesh and of Brazilian exuberance. The main attraction is the Rodizio, an all-you-can succession of grilled beef, ostrich, buffalo, and other meats brought impaled on swords to your table by "Pasadores" cowboys, together with a broad (though pedestrian) salad bar and buffet. The à la carte menu includes enough fish and vegetarian options to mollify the non-carnivores. Live Latin music, and samba dancers in small but lavish Carneval costumes, spice up the ambience. Suits boisterous groups well.</eat>

I made a maskmap based on the static city region map in the Vancouver main article
