"Learn" Section[edit]

This section is a mess: The second paragraph contradicts the first. Someone who knows which paragraph is more accurate should edit this section. Michael 19:37, 15 February 2008 (EST)

Alternative banner for this article?[edit]

Banner currently used in this article
Suggested new alternative banner

I created a new alternative banner for this article (I initially created it first and foremost so that it would be used at the top of the parallel article in the Hebrew edition of Wikivoyage, yet I later decided to also suggest that the English Wikivoyage community would consider using it here as well). So, which banner do you prefer having at the top of this article? ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 05:02, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The new banner is clearer when clicked to zoom in, but I like the composition of the existing banner better, so that rules the day for me. Besides, let's all hope these buildings are still standing when peace finally breaks out in Yemen. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:46, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I prefer the current one, for colours and composition. JuliasTravels (talk) 13:07, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Biased again as original creator, but I think the first one is more panoramic while the second is just another encyclopaedic image. James Atalk 10:01, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
First one is too blurry, so second. A non-blurry version of the first would win. Syced (talk) 10:35, 1 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, can we go for the alternative banner after all?
The existing banner has been stretched from its lower resolution source, making it look particularly bad on a high definition screen. Andrewssi2 (talk) 21:05, 5 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I see your point, but no, I think we can't, and this is like arguing about a new banner for Aleppo at this time. Poor Yemen is a victim of a brutal civil war and reportedly indiscriminate bombing by Saudi Arabia. It seems to me, the least we can do is wait to see what the country looks like when the war is finally over, and have discussions about banners on other articles, rather than this one. Warning[edit]

@SelfieCity: In the Warning, we tell readers that "Most Western governments advise against all travel to Yemen because of the threat to life and destruction from war and terrorist activities."

What more information are we providing travellers by adding, "Put simply, avoid travel to Yemen unless absolutely necessary."

Doesn't this just repeat the advice provided by "most Western governments"? But instead of having the authority of governments, it is just advice from a bunch of people on the internet. I don't think this repetition makes the article better. Ground Zero (talk) 06:00, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I was just making it absolutely clear; if you don't want that text there, you can remove it. We just don't want a traveler who says they "want to Yemen and...", you know. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 14:26, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the "Western governments" warning is clearer and more authoritative because of who said it, and because it lists specific reasons. Ground Zero (talk) 19:10, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed currency, time formatting and spelling conventions[edit]

Below is a proposed infobox to let readers know which formatting conventions to use in Wikivoyage articles. Do you agree with these proposals? If you have direct knowledge of what is most commonly used in the country, please let us know. Ground Zero (talk) 14:04, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As there have been no comments, I've implemented the proposed box. Ground Zero (talk) 06:49, 14 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Red Sea Islands[edit]

The page Red Sea Islands is hollow and I suggest redirecting it either into Yemen, or to the disambiguation. Quite apart from the terrible troubles of that country, the islands are actively volcanic, as the banner pic shows. There is even a case for deletion: someone typing "Red Sea Islands" probably doesn't expect to land in Yemen, but is looking for the quieter places further north. Grahamsands (talk) 12:43, 15 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What disambiguation? Is there one? If there isn't and you'd like to create one that covers all islands in the Red Sea, go for it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:49, 15 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I redirected to Yemen and added a line to the Red Sea disambiguation. Grahamsands (talk) 08:19, 16 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
