Accessibility[edit]

Swept in from the pub

I have started Wikivoyage:Accessibility to discuss web accessibility issues relating to Wikivoyage. Your participation is invited. Pigsonthewing (talk) 14:24, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look at Wikivoyage:Access Expedition for some background info. This may be something worth having a second look at. JamesA >talk 07:20, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Great to look at web accessibility issues - I have Ushers and am legally blind and hard of hearing so I've a vested interest in that - but what I'd really like to see just now is access info on the travel pages. Or at least a section where people could add it. I see there's a contact section so we can all get our wi-fi fix, so why not access info... Even if it's only reccommendations for best accessible attractions, accommodation etc. I see people are a bit wary of changing templates and stuff but currently the info is very much geared towards single 18-25 yr olds. Since Lonely Planet etc already exist it'd be good to take the opportunity to make this site work for those with kids, disabilities, animals, grey hairs etc.--Dakinjones (talk) 19:02, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There is some stuff for all of those, for example Travelling with children and Retiring abroad. You and others are welcome to add more. Pashley (talk) 19:13, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Spoken version of Wikivoyage articles[edit]

Swept in from the pub

Hi, everyone! I don't believe we have any spoken versions of any of these articles so far. User:GK tramrunner RU asked whether we need any. Seems like a great idea! What do you all think? Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:41, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It wouldn't do that much good for most visually impaired people. There are free screen readers these days for every major platform and most visually impaired or blind people would just prefer to use those. There is probably an audience for this but it's not people like me ... except those who can't use screen readers well, who probably wouldn't be able to get to the pages and play the files easily anyway. Graham87 (talk) 07:38, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Partial Support :- Spoken articles would be useful (assuming there's an effort made to keep them accurate. Even better would be well researched audio tours or walks to support existing material.
    • "... At the traffic lights take a right, proceeding along the pedestrianised precinct, note the brutalist apartments on the right... These were built in the late 1960's as a regeneration project. ...". Is there a mechanism for linking waypoint and audio clips? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 07:41, 28 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • I'd also have no objections to appropriate video content being added. Whilst the Time-life travelouge style of video probably would not be something to show on Wikivoyage, There are various travel vlogs on YouTube that could be used as a guide.

ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 07:41, 28 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Videos are not allowed on this site. If you'd like to change that, please read existing discussions that are archived at Wikivoyage talk:Image policy. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:29, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Too much motion on Wikivoyage[edit]

Please improve the accessibility of Wikivoyage for people who are sensitive to motion:

  • The slide show on the front page needs a pause button to comply with WCAG 2.0 AA.
  • If I have prefers-reduced-motion set in my operating system:
    • Don't slide the front page slide show; do a cross-fade instead.
    • When I click New Topic on a talk page, don't do an animated scroll; just jump to the right place on the page without animation.
    • Only update the preview when I request an update. The constant preview updating as I type is distracting.

Thisisnotatest (talk) 01:12, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Thisisnotatest: I don't have answers for you on the first three points, but I do for the last two.
  • This is true with all Wikimedia wikis. If you do not want the reply tool enabled, then disable it in Special:Preferences
  • Again, this is the case with nearly all Wikimedia wikis.
For point 3, consider bringing this up on the Wikivoyage:Travellers' pub or Talk:Main Page; let's see how that discussion goes. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 01:19, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
