Picture[edit]

I've read that pictures are necessary: this one (mine, CC-ed) could be used (if the queslity is considered acceptable by the community): http://www.flickr.com/photos/i_am_neuron/1303785088 This is somewhere nearby Bergen YMCA hostel; either Nedre Korskirkeallmenningen (Torget is to my left), or the next one, parallel street (locals, please correct). I've browsed through the rest of my pictures from Norway, but this is the only one of Bergen, which passes my internal quality control. (WT-en) I-am-neuron 12:39, 19 May 2008 (EDT)

Disambiguation or Famous?[edit]

Hello! The name "Bergen" is also the often used short name of the town "Bergen auf Rügen" on the island called "Rügen" in Baltic Sea, the capital town of the administrative district Rügen (district) in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. --(WT-en) Atlas 04:22, 1 Feb 2006 (EST)

There is also Bergen (North Dakota), Bergen County, Bergen (New Jersey) but I think being the second city of Norway makes it more a famous place. The other Bergens could be mentioned on a Bergen (disambiguation) page, once people write articles about them. -- (WT-en) Huttite 05:14, 1 Feb 2006 (EST)

The famous Royksopp is from Bergen just thought you would like to know! (WT-en) Traveler2006 13:52, 28 March 2006 (EST)

Nope, they are not, they are from Tromsø, they only live here.

Varg Vikernes[edit]

I don't think that there should be so much about Varg Vikernes' trial under the section about Fantoft stave church. Maybe a line about the fact that a satanist most probably was responsible for the arson, but I think it's wrong to give the entire history of the case here – that belongs in Wikipedia and is of no interest to the average traveler. Unless someone can convince me not to, I will rewrite the paragraph and remove some of the info. --80.202.102.202 16:10, 28 May 2007 (EDT)

Prostitution[edit]

The article claims the following: "At Strandkaien and in Strandgaten, you'll find Bergen's red light district at night. As prostitution is legal in Norway, it is unfortunately very visible. Prostitutes can be very ongoing. Although the risk of getting in to trouble is very low, families should be aware of the area, as not to expose their children to the sad reality. "

It is true that there might be some prostitutes in this area. However they are very reare to be seen. Personally I have been living many years in Bergen, and have seen prostitutes there only a few times. I disagree that this is a large problem in Bergen.

As a 3rd. opinion i would say that prostitution is visible in Bergen if you are in Strandgaten. I used to live in that area before and if i was walking alone you could be sure to get at least one confrontation by one of the 3-4girls. If you stay outside of these areas prostitution is not a large problems and people should generally stay away from these areas.

Excellent![edit]

This article is great! I've nominated it for DOTM May 2008. However, my one concern is that some parts of this — eg. every man's right, the bits about Norwegian police and so on — belong more in the Norway article than here.

And an OSM map of Bergen that could be used for Wikivoyage is now available here. (WT-en) Jpatokal 23:08, 9 February 2008 (EST)

Finally someone else! I feel like I have been working on this article for ages, I thought I was all alone in here… I'm the guy who did most of the work. I prefer not to register so it's a bit hard to trace it. Anyway, I'm glad you're happy with the article. I'm not sure I think it's ready to be DOTM yet (but it might be by May), in some places I think it's too extensive (I just removed some of what you mentioned), and at least the bold parts of the to do-list above should be fixed. I've tried to make a map, but I'm afraid it's beyond my level of understanding. I hope that someone can help me out. 80.202.112.184 08:45, 10 February 2008 (EST)
Please do make sure the content is already in the Norway article before you remove anything...
And if you click on the URL above, you'll get a usable street map of Bergen. Cut out the parts you don't need, add icons on top for hotels, restaurants etc and you're set! (WT-en) Jpatokal 11:57, 10 February 2008 (EST)
It is. And I will. At least try. 80.202.112.184 15:36, 10 February 2008 (EST)
That map thing really beats me. I neither have the software nor the knowledge. I mean, I could always find a way to make an ugly raster map, but I don't think it's right to put that much work in something that should be replaced after all. I cross my fingers and hope that someone who have made a Wikivoyage style map before will come and rescue me (I will of course help out as good as I can). 80.202.112.184, now 129.177.169.42 11:34, 12 February 2008 (EST)
I finally figured things out. Working on a map now. 129.177.169.42, now 84.48.163.223 05:52, 10 April 2008 (EDT)

Aquavit[edit]

Great Infobox about aquavit. But I think this belongs to the article about Norway. Since aquavit is a tradition not special only for Bergen, but rather for all of Norway. (WT-en) ViMy 12:52, 15 February 2009 (EST)

I concur, that infobox fits better for the Norway guide... --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 13:31, 15 February 2009 (EST)

Can this article become a star ?[edit]

Maybe. But then we need a map. Are ther anyone out there that can make maps. I have tried to figure out how to do it. But ... (WT-en) ViMy 07:01, 4 July 2010 (EDT)

Try Project:How to draw a map! It might require some time at first, but everyone can do it. This article is of great quality and I think it can be nominated for star when a map is present. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 10:10, 4 July 2010 (EDT)
I have. What I could not figure out is how to aquire a base map. I understand how to place symbols. (WT-en) ViMy 16:21, 4 July 2010 (EDT)
It's easy and also explained there. In short, visit [1], search for 'Bergen', then press Export. There you can create a PNG base map which you can import into Inkscape. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 12:06, 5 July 2010 (EDT)

This is indeed a great article. I cropped and brightened the lead image, but I'm still not sure it's the best for the top of the article, as it is fairly colorless. I would also encourage you to spread the images out a bit throughout the article, to break up the large sections of black on white text, and to enlarge the pictures a bit. Currently, they are all using the syntax "thumb|right", but "right" is redundant, and could be replaced with "260px" or "280px"—something like that.

Some work left to be done, but it would be fantastic to see our first Norwegian star! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 20:10, 5 July 2010 (EDT)

Yeah. There has to be done something with the pictures. (WT-en) ViMy 12:36, 6 July 2010 (EDT)
I had to remove the 260/280 px setting from the pictures, as it caused some kind of weird software error. 129.177.48.174 05:13, 15 October 2010 (EDT)

See and Drink[edit]

This section are organized by districts. Should drink be aranged by price range. And See alpabheticly? What do you think ? (WT-en) ViMy 15:34, 20 July 2010 (EDT)

I can't find anything about this in the Manual of style, but I think it is a bad idea to rearrange the sections. It's much more convenient for people who visit the city to have a list of bars and attractions organised by area, it will make it easier to navigate. 129.177.48.174 05:12, 15 October 2010 (EDT)

Alternative banner for this article?[edit]

old banner currently used in this article
suggested new banner (which is currently used in the parallel article in the Hebrew Wikivoyage)

In the Hebrew Wikivoyage we are currently using this banner instead of the one which is currently used here. Do you think too that this banner would would better than the existing one? ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 02:29, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think the existing one gives a much better impression of the place. The proposed change is kind of nice, but it's another zoomed out cityscape that could be almost anywhere and gives little local flavor. Texugo (talk) 02:40, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'd phrase it differently, but with the same upshot: The new banner would be perfectly fine if this article had no good banner already, but not as a replacement for the current one, which is better. It's more interesting to look at all those pretty houses than at the panorama. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:02, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I remember visiting Bergen by ferry for the first time and seeing those houses :) Yes, the proposal would not be an improvement at all. Andrewssi2 (talk) 06:27, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That line of houses is Bergen's trademark, and a UNESCO heritage site. Better keep it. --Erik den yngre (talk) 19:37, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
