- Madara — Lying 15 km east of Shumen, Madara is home to the Madara Rider (or Madara Horseman, Bulgarian: Мадарски конник), a large rock relief depicting a horseman carved on a cliff, which likely dates back to 710 CE, and is in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
- Also nearby are Thracian tombs and the two of the ancient capitals of the Bulgarian Kingdoms, Pliska and Preslav.
- Southwest of Shumen close to Kotel, there is a nice village, Medven, with old wooden houses, a nice little waterfall, and a good restaurant and hotel (30 leva for a double room).
