Gulbarga (district) > Kalaburagi

Gulbarga (ಗುಲಬರ್ಗಾ) is one of the major cities in Karnataka State. This city may also known as city of Domes and Temples ,

Understand

This city was annexed to the sultanate of Delhi in the early fourteenth century, first by General Ulugh Khan and then by Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq. After the sultan's death, it fell to the Bahmani kingdom (of which it was the capital between 1347 and c. 1424) and, upon the break-up of that power, to Bijapur.

Gulbarga is derived from Persian language, in which Gul means flower and berg means leaf, thus making Gulberga once a land of lavish living. It is also known as Kalburgi which means the land of stones (kal means stone in Kannada).

History

The city of Gulbarga was founded by the Bahmani Sultans in the 14th century as their capital and was called as Ahsenabad. Its name was later changed to Gulbarga during Nizam rule.
