North Bangalore is the northern part of the city.
Understand
[edit]Quiet and rural not too long ago, today North Bangalore is the epicenter of Bangalore's booming IT industry. The northeastern district of Whitefield and the Outer Ring Road are festooned on both sides by office parks and high-end apartment complexes, and also suffers from some of the worst traffic jams in the city. You're unlikely to spend too much time here as a tourist, but quite likely to end up here if you visit on business.
Get in
[edit]The Namma Metro Purple Line runs from the city center to Whitefield. The Blue Line, opening in stages from 2026, will run along the Outer Ring Road and connect the area directly to Kempegowda International Airport.
See
[edit]- 1 Bangalore Palace, Palace Rd, Vasanth Nagar. Built by the Maharajas of Mysore. For many years the building was neglected as a tourist attraction but is now open to the public. This is a run-down building with paint peeling on the interior and is generally a tourist trap to be avoided. ₹100/450 for Indians/foreigners and ₹675 for a still camera. This includes an audio guide that points out rooms, photos and other things.

- 2 Devanahalli Fort (near Bangalore Airport). This fort was constructed in 1501 and is in good repair and worth seeing. The birthplace of Tipu Sultan, also known as the Tiger of Mysore, is near the fort. There are numerous temples within the fort with impeccable architecture, of which the Venugopala Swami Temple is the most visited and the oldest. The walls of the temple depict various scenes from Ramayana and the pillars have beautiful statues carved on them.

- 3 Mahatma Gandhi Botanical Garden (within the University of Agricultural Science campus).

- 4 Makalidurga. A hill fort and a popular trekking destination for adventurers. The trek begins with a 2-km walk on the railway track from the station of Makalidurga. You can also ride bikes to the beginning of the trekking trail as well. A lot of refreshments are advised to be carried in case one wants to trek this hillock.

- 5 Shivaganage (Dakshina Kashi). A Hindu pilgrimage site atop a 1,368 m (4,488 ft) tall mountain. The mountain is itself shaped like a lingam (phallic symbol of Shiva). It is also a popular site for rock climbing. The entire trail to the peak is well marked, and the presence of human-made steps makes the trail suitable for beginners. There are frequent rest opportunities with stalls serving food and drinks. The trekking path to reach summit from foothills is of 6 km (3.7 mi) in a pre-defined path. The trail becomes steep and narrow near the summit of the mountain safety rails are provided in such areas. Monkeys are the main fauna inhabiting the hill.

- 11 Ghati Subramanya (ಘಾಟಿ ಸುಬ್ರಮಣ್ಯ). The uniqueness of this temple is that the prime deity Lord Karthikeya, is found together with Lord Narasimha. According to mythology, both idols are believed to have emerged from the earth. The idol of Karthikeya with a seven headed cobra is made from a single stone. On the rear of the stone is the carving of Narasimha.

- 12 ISKCON Temple, Hare Krishna Hill, Chord Rd (metro: Mahalakshmi Green ), ☏ +91 99860 77269, +91 80 23471956, +91 80 23578346, fax: +91 80 23578625. 3:45AM-8PM. A huge cultural complex built on a hillock in Rajajinagar atop scenic surroundings, is a perfect blend of modern technology and spiritual harmony. The huge cultural complex was built to promote Vedic culture and spiritual learning and abounds with shops selling devotional items and souvenirs. The annual Krishna and Balarama Rath Yatra is attended by thousands. However, due to the huge flow of foreign visitors, it has mostly become a heavily commercialised place and less of a religious centre.

- Maruthi Mandir, Mahakalshmi Layout (5 min drive from ISKCON temple). A Hanuman Temple is opposite, in the gate of Mahalakshmi Layout. This is a rock hill with huge idols of Hanuman and Mahalakshmi temples. The annual festival of Hanuman Jayanti during December is very attractive.

One can't see or feel any kind of Bhakti in this temple, because at each move inside the temple, there will be a person collecting money, which creates such a disturbance for the concentration on Bhakti. On each step, the devotees will be concentrating on the money boxes (huṇḍi), and people standing to ask for money as offerings. Free entrance, camera ₹25.

Buy
[edit]- Marathahalli Main Road and Factory Outlets. Some distance from central Bangalore (although not difficult to reach) is Marathahalli (a village in a previous life). The main road of this suburb is now a haven for factory outlets for all major brands. You can expect prices here to be cheaper than in the malls, at least 20-30% price difference but can be up to 50% cheaper when it comes to some of the major denim brands. As if India wasn't cheap enough. Although this is the best place to go to for factory outlet shopping, there are smaller factory outlets scattered across the city. Also look out for sales held by the major brands to get rid of end of season stock (again end of summer or end of monsoon), these are usually advertised in newspapers or look for signs posted on major roads.
- 1 Sampige Road. The heart of Malleswaram, connecting Sheshadripuram to IISc. Sampige Road is around 2 km (1.2 mi) long, has a wide range of shops that sells books, electronic items, silk sarees, handicrafts, cloth materials, Hindu pooja materials, sweets and all the trivial things you can buy on earth. Also try Malleswaram 8th cross on Sampige road (aptly named Brigade Road of Malleswram) for a vibrant shopping experience. Sampige Road is also home to best flower market and fruits market in Bangalore. If you are tired of going to individual shops you can go to department stores such as Fabmall, Foodworld and Nilgiris.

Mid-range
[edit]- 7 Kund Indian Barbeque, 303, Ashoka Terrace, 5th Main Rd, Indira Nagar 1st Stage. Grilled meats and biryani.

- 8 Little Italy, 654, 100 Foot Rd, Indiranagar. A chic Italian vegetarian restaurant, faddish and overpriced. Sometimes the staff switch off A/C if the tables are less than half-filled.

- 9 Rahhams Families (Richies), MM Rd. Serves the kind of biryani that is the Bangalore original. It is midway on MM Rd, and hard to miss because of the crowds that throng its takeaway counter. One visits Richies only for the food—tables and chairs made of synthetic wood, and dim light from gaudy chandeliers don’t exactly make for great ambiance. A motley bunch of diners cram the place for lunch and dinner (they have added 2nd and 3rd floors). The biryani here is delicious, and you must love meat to love Richies. The menu is limited; but the mutton and chicken biryani stand out and they are not flavoured with the same masala, or heaven forbid, rice, their kababs are something nice and unique too. Biryani ₹600.
