Districts VI., VII. and VIII., named Terezvaros, Erzsébetváros, and Józsefváros respectively, form the Central Pest around the core downtown district of V. Much like Belváros, they are full of ornate historic buildings from the 19th century, as well as mnay of the most famous attractions. The area also includes two major railway stations - Keleti, where most of the international and intercity trains arrive, and Nyugati, which in. al. connects the city with Liszt Ferenc Airport.

The main feature of Central Pest is Andrássy út, the avenue built to emulate the Champs-Élysées of Paris. It connects the Erzsébet Square in V. District and Heroes' Square in City Park. It crosses the körút (boulevard ringroad) at the always-busy Oktogon square, which got its name from its shape. At the end of Andrássy út the City Park (Városliget) is probably the most pleasant of Pest's districts and houses a number of interesting if low-key attractions often skipped by the package tour companies. The area is easily accessible with the yellow subway line (nearest station : Hősök tere) and entry into the park, including the castle grounds, is free. This boulevard and its surroundings, include the Jewish Quarter. All this area, including the Underground Railway is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Jewish quarter

This area of the Hungarian capital is also known as the Jewish Quarter. It was established as such at the turn of the 19th century, when the Jewish community gathered in this district, along the road leading to the bridge that crosses the Danube. The center of this area became Kiraly Street. Budapest today is home to the largest Jewish community in Central Europe. This area one can find most of Budapest's site's of Jewish cultural heritage, like the „Synagogue Triangle.” (This was also where in 1944 the Pest Ghetto was built.) At Dohany Street 2. you will find the world's second largest and Europe's largest synagogue, the Dohany Street Synagogue. The site of this building is also the birthplace of Theodor Herzl, Father of Zionism. In the garden is the Martyrs' Cemetery and the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial. Adjacent to the temple is the Jewish Museum.

The second point of the Triangle is the synagogue on Rumbach Street, also known as „the little synagogue.” The third point is the Kazinczy Street Orthodox Synagogue. This area is home to kosher shops and Budapest's only mikveh (ritual bath). This historic district, as a part of the city's rehabilitation strategy, started to look towards youth culture and tourism in recent years: from 2002 some now very popular cafes, bars and summer music venues opened in buildings that were earlier considered for demolition: the Szimpla, the Gozsdu Mano Klub, or the Koleves (Stone Soup) to name a few. Since then the area, especially Kazinczy Street is not only known for its rich history and cultural heritage, but for it's unique cultural present, with "ruin pubs," art and design shops, like the Kék Ló (Blue Horse)and Printa graphic design studio which incidentally also function as pubs/cafes. In 2002 this historic neighborhood bordered by Kiraly and Csanyi Street, Klauzal Square, Kisdiofa and Dohany Street and Karoly Boulevard was named the old Jewish Quarter of Pest and was entered into the UNESCO World Heritage Conservation Zone.

Budapest-Keleti

Getting into Central Pest is very easy - in fact, if you are arriving to Budapest by plane or by train, this is where you will probably start your visit or at least you will need to pass by. Budapest's two main railway stations - Keleti and Nyugati - are in Central Pest.

Keleti, or "Eastern" railway station, grew to became Budapest's main railway terminal, handling the vast majority of international train, mostly coming actually from the west. A number of domestic trains also arrive at Keleti, again, mostly from the west. The station is served by both lines M2 and M4 of the Budapest metro. Budapest-Nyugati
  • 2 Nyugati pályaudvar (Budapest-Nyugati Railway Terminal, Western Railway Station), at the intersection of Grand Boulevard and Váci Avenue. (: 'Nyugati pályaudvar' or tram: 4, 6 or bus 9, 26, 91, 191, 226, 291). Nyugati (Hungarian for "western") is actually in the east of the city, but its name comes from the fact that it originally served western-oriented railway lines, which is no more the case, as the station is limited to handling domestic traffic, including this coming from the east like from Debrecen or Szeged. That said, you may also end up there when coming from abroad, as the trains stopping at Ferihegy arrive here - you can use those trains to connect to bus 200E from Budapest Ferihegy International Airport. The bus-train combination is the quickest way to get to the city centre from the airport. The square in front of the station (predictably named Nyugati ter) also serves as a transport hub with several bus routes, tram routes 4 and 6, and a station on M3 line of the Budapest Metro.

Erzsébetváros

Erzsébetváros (lit. "Elizabethtown") is traditional name of the VII. district. The name refers to Empress Elizabeth of Austria and Hungary, popularly known as Sissi. This is the smallest of Budapest's 23 districts, covering only 2 km2.

Dohány Street Synagogue in Elizabethtown
  • 1 Great Synagogue and the Jewish Museum (Dohány utcai zsinagóga és a Zsidó Múzeum), VII. Dohány ut. 2-8 (: Astoria), ☏ +36 1 343-0420, .   • 2 Kazinczy Street Synagogue (Sasz-Chevra ortodox nagyzsinagóga, Kazinczy utcai zsinagóga), VII. Kazinczy u. 29-31 (: 'Astoria ' or : Opera). The city’s Orthodox Jewish congregation decided to build its own independent synagogue in 1909. Late Art Nouveau architecture, built between 1912–13, by the Löffler brothers. The most characteristic synagogue is part of a complex including a school and communal Hall built in 1911. The façade of the synagogue which fronts onto Kazinczy Street is cons dered to be one of the outstanding works of Hungarian Late-Secessionist architecture. The interior of the house of worship also designed by the Loffler brothers. From all four corners staircases lead to the two-story female chorus. At the east (right) wall can be found the Ark of the Covenant with battlements. Also there are two artificial marble columns, the rabbi 's table and the reading desk for preprayer.Above this find you the symbol of kohanits the blessing hand and the Star of David. Also there the two tables of stone can be seen (Rákos Mano works). Middle of the room after five steps is the Torah reading platform.Fine pieces there the wrought iron grids by József Hochmann, the Ark of the Covenant and the carved benches age are originals made by Valkai István. Inside the Rumbach Street Synagogue

It was built not as an exact replica of, but as an homage to the style of the octagonal, domed Dome of the Rock Muslim shrine in Jerusalem The column capitals are decorated with Alhambra Moorish character. Gold, blue and red colored reliefs can be found on the walls.

Józsefváros

Józsefváros is traditional name of the VIII. district, literally meaning "Josephtown" and referring to Emperor Joseph II of Austria and Hungary. This neighborhood is a happy, swarming place with scores of students and several cafés and pizzerias. Keleti (Eastern) Railway Station is located at the junction of 7th, 8th and 14th districts.

Chapel of Saint Roch

Expanded after the 1739-40's plague epidemic, giving thanks to God and the patron Saint, because this epdemic avoided Pest City. In 1746 the city council had built a hermitage on the back wall of the sanctuary. The last hermit of St.Roch,-Andreas,-died in 1810, and was buried in the Servite's crypt. - Between 1751 and 1765 built the tower and the sacred statues of the facade. This place became a permanent center annual ceremonies and processions. In 1797,-at the time of built the Public Hospital,- the chapel was renovated, a music gallery was built over the entrance, developed the final form of the spire, two new bells was donated by Vicar Board. - The sanctuary is decorated with monumental painted stone images, made by Esther Matthioni in 1963. Here can be see on the left wall, the image of St. Roch and on the right, image of St. Rosalia. On pedestal of the new altar is a wood sculpture composition. The National Museum is well worth visiting for the interior itself
  • 23 National Museum (Nemzeti Múzeum), VIII. Múzeum körút 14/16 (: Astoria Or M3: Kálvin tér), ☏ +36 1 338-2122, . Tu-Su 10:00-18:00 Mar-Oct, 10:00-17:00 Nov-Mar. Not to be confused with the Hungarian National Gallery (Nemzeti Galéria), located in Buda Castle. Founded in 1802 by Count Ferenc Széchenyi, whose manuscript, map, numismatic and print collections formed its initial core holdings, the Hungarian National Museum was designed and built by the popular architect Mihály Polláck between 1837-1847. When it opened, it was the fourth largest museum in Europe and the first public museum in the Hungarian capital. The building became the symbol of the 1848-1849 Revolution so every year on the National Day (March 15) usually commemoration held here. However, it was far enough from the city proper that sometimes loose cattle from the weekly Kálvin tér market wandered into the museum.
    Before entering, take note of the museum's exterior, a fine example of neoclassical architecture, with an exceptional portico. Eight Corinthian columns support a frieze with an ornamental cornice and a large pediment. The pediment features the allegorical figure of Pannonia (Pannonia was the Roman name for the Hungarian lands) sitting with the Hungarian coat of arms on her shield, surrounded on either side by Science and Art.
    The exterior of the museum is also significant for what has taken place there. According to a popular urban legend during the 1848 revolutions that swept through Central Europe, on 15 March, Sándor Petőfi (perhaps Hungary's most famous patriotic poet) recited his emotionally gripping poem called "National Song" to a large crowd from the left pillar of the National Museum's exterior staircase. This poem pleaded with the nation to liberate Hungary from the Habsburg oppression. Not everyone was impressed. The director of the museum recorded in his diary that a noisy mob had gathered outside the building that day, disturbing his work so much that he left for home.
    Major acquisitions and collections donated by the Kubinyi, Pyrker, Marczibányi and Jankovich families rapidly expanded the museum's holdings. Late in the 19th century some collections were separated from the general holdings to form new specialized museums such as the Museum(s) of Fine Arts, Applied Arts, Natural Science and Ethnography. Today the museum's five major divisions (archaeology, Middle Ages, modern era, numismatics, historical paintings), two permanent exhibitions, and archaeological library (with over 100,000 volumes!) make it one of the richest museums in Central Europe.     €5.5, €3, photo €2, concert €5, Budapest-card discount.

Józsefváros Railway Station

  • 58 Nyugati pályaudvar (Budapest-Nyugati Railway Terminal, Western Railway Station), at the intersection of Grand Boulevard and Váci Avenue. (: 'Nyugati pályaudvar' or tram: 4, 6 or bus 9, 26, 91, 191, 226, 291). Designed planned by August de Serres and was built by the Eiffel Company, the station opened on 28 October 1877, replacing the previous one razed to make place for the Nagykörút (Grand Boulevard). The station building retains the atmosphere of bygone days, in particular the ticket hall. There is a corridor between the main station entrance and McDonald's on the right-hand side of the main entrance. Formerly the station restaurant, this McDonald's is reputed to be the most elegant in the world. Apart from the ornate lighting, ceiling mouldings and general décor of the fast-food restaurant, Nyugati station McDonald's has a McCafé on the mezzanine floor, serving coffee and cakes in a more comfortable environment than the lower floor. Also worth mentioning is the Royal Waiting Room, built for Emperor Franz Joseph I. This can be found about 100 m on the left-hand side after entering the main station hall behind a pair of high doors. Beside the railway station and partially above its open area there is the WestEnd City Center shopping mall.

The House of Terror

The last big remodelling happened in 1964-66, when it was rebuilt according to the plans of architect Alexander Azbej. The new building was built Žilina's (Slovakia) pyrogranite. The facades are decorated with a relief consisting of 757 elements which is Gyula Illes sculptor's work. In the foyer is located a large mosaic image, its showing a woman Greek chorus. You can get cheaper tickets during the summer when there often are opera festivals. Most operas are in Italian, but at the State Opera they subtitle the entire performance in Hungarian. The hall is beautiful and in its original state. On the balcony surrounding the hall they have put the name of every classic opera performed there into the wood. It has to be seen to be fully appreciated. Appropriate dress - suits or sport coats for men, dress or skirt/blouse for women (although tuxedos to backpacker wear is seen during the week). - One of Europe's architecturally most breathtaking opera house's company performs traditional opera and ballet. The quality of its huge repertoire is not always up to international standards, but if you don't expect too much, you will spend a decent night here. Cheaper tickets offering reduced visibility are a good deal if you don't want to pay HUF2,500 for the official guided tour to the building. The company also performs at Theatre Thália. There are dozens of romkocsma (literally translated: ruin-pubs) in city centre (V.-VI.-VII. districts). These inhabit ruined courts of old houses, therefore they are hard to be found. Ask locals for hints and go for the unique post-socialist atmosphere!
