They have been making wine in the area for a very long time, and producing world-renowned Coonawarra reds due to the special combination of sun and soil. It's a very small area, and a number of wineries have been established on the fringes and just outside the Coonawarra which produce wines almost indistinguishable from the Coonawarra versions.
The wineries are strung out along a relatively short stretch of road.
