Cumbernauld Town Centre

Cumbernauld is very much near the centre of Scotland, one of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Cumbernauld is a new town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, created in 1956 as a population overflow for Glasgow. Its population was 49,664 at the time of the 2001 census. The name comes from the Scots Gaelic comar nan allt, meaning the meeting of the waters.

See

Cumbernauld is one of five new towns built in Scotland in the 1950s to contain the overspill from Glasgow. As a result there is next to nothing of architectural interest in the town unless you are keen on 1960's shopping centres.

The town was the setting of the popular Scottish film "Gregorys Girl" although there is nothing at all celebrating this fact.

Do

Cumbernauld is the home of Clyde F.C., a football (soccer) team who play in the Scottish Third Division. Their ground (stadium) is called Broadwood. Clyde FC previously played in Rutherglen before moving to Cumbernauld. They are sponsored by Optical Express who's CEO is believed to be a fan of the club. Games are generally on a Saturday at 3pm. Fixtures can be found at the Scottish Football League site.

Cumbernauld also has a Junior football side, Cumbernauld United who play at Guy's Meadow.

There is a Rugby Team, Cumbernauld RFC too.

There is also a museum, which is about Cumbernauld's history.
