Deep Ellum is the neighborhood just east of downtown Dallas. A former hub for blues and African American arts and culture, Deep Ellum is now home to bars, live music venues, tattoo parlors, art galleries, restaurants, and many residents.

Get in

Deep Ellum consists of a 5 to 10-block-long stretch along Elm, Main, and Commerce streets east of Central Expressway from downtown. It can be reached easily from Downtown via Commerce or Main Streets, northern parts of Dallas via Central Expressway to Good-Latimer, or eastern parts of Dallas via I-30 to First Ave/Exposition Ave. Deep Ellum may also be reached by DART's Deep Ellum and Baylor light rail stations.

Street parking is free during weekday business hours, but the meters are active nights and weekends. There are several pay lots in the area.

  • Undermain Theatre, 3200 Main St, +1 214-747-5515. Located under Main St in Historic Deep Ellum, the Undermain Theatre completed its 25th season in May 2010. Undermain produces exciting, original plays and acclaimed international works. Undermain stirs emotions and inspires the imagination.   • Café Brazil, 2815 Elm St. The Deep Ellum location of the Dallas favorite.
  • Monica's Aca y Alla, 2914 Main St, +1 214 748 7140. A unique Deep Ellum Mexican eatery with many original creations.
  • Pepe and Mito's, 2935 Elm St, +1 214 741-1901. This Deep Ellum Tex-Mex restaurant truly has some of the best Tex-Mex in Dallas. Try the tacos norteños, the fried taquitos, or the shrimp enchiladas verdes. You can't go wrong; there's not a bad choice on the menu. Everything is homemade, even the chips & sauce.
  • Sol's Taco Lounge, 2626 Commerce St, +1 214 651 7657. Open late on the weekends.

Drink

  • Blind Lemon, 2805 Main St. Despite apparently being named for blues legend "Blind Lemon" Jefferson, this place plays mostly 70's and 80's music. Part of the Club Clearview complex.
  • The Bone, 2724 Elm St. This spacious New Orleans-style bar hosts live jazz and blues. It can be quite crowded on the weekends. Admission for men is $5 after 11PM.
  • Club Dada, 2720 Elm St. Shows W-Su. One of the oldest live music venues in Deep Ellum. They have a nice patio in back.
  • Curtain Club, 2800 Main St. Live music venue which hosts both local and national acts.
  • Lizard Lounge, 2424 Swiss. Pass under the bridge on Good Latimer to find this spacious 2-story dance club. On Thursday and Sunday nights they have popular gothic/industrial events known as The Church.
  • Poor David's Pub, 1313 S Lamar St. Actually a bit away from Deep Ellum on the south side of downtown. One of Dallas' oldest live music venues, this joint has been open since 1977. Moved to its spartan Lamar St location from longstanding Greenville Av location a few years ago.
  • Sons of Hermann Hall, 3414 Elm. On the far east edge of Deep Ellum. This venue hosts live music of all types from both local and national acts.

Deep Ellum offers no accommodation itself but is within close shot of hotels Downtown and on east I-30 near Fair Park.
