Exeter is a small village in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. It has an English town charm and feel. The town centre consists of a train station, an antique store, and a general store cafe. It is surrounded by residential housing with nice large gardens. There is one guesthouse available for accommodation.

Get in

Trains run to Sydney around every two hours, or every hour during peak. Usually requiring a change of train at Campbelltown. Regional (booked) trains do not stop here. You can take bikes on the train.

Exeter is signposted off the Hume Highway.

Get around

The town only consists of two shops next to the station.

You can access other Southern Highlands destinations by train every two hours or so. You can cycle to Bundanoon (5 km) and onto the Morton National Park (another 2km).

A car would be convenient to see much of the surrounding area, and to get something to eat after 5pm.

See

Exeter is renowned for is gardens, and pretty country town feel. But unless there is an open garden that weekend, its hard to see unless you peer over peoples fences. There are not any always open gardens here, but you can walk the streets of the town easily.

Do

Buy

Have a look around the antique store for something old or broken you would like to have. After that have a look around the general store. Then you are done.

Eat

There is a general store in Exeter, which also does coffee and meals. It closes daily at 5pm though, so is not really suitable for dinner. The nearest meal after 5pm is in Sutton Forest or Bundanoon.

Drink

There is no pub in Exeter. The nearest is in Bundanoon or Sutton Forest.

Sleep

  • Summerfield Cottage B&B, Wilson's Lane (Walking distance to the station), +61 2 4883 4568. A large old fashioned guesthouse cottage, with four bedrooms, one double with bathroom, one twin with bathroom, and two doubles that share one bathroom in the hall. Well restored. Communal lounge with log fire. Homemade jams, and stewed fruits with included breakfast. Friendly resident owner. Beautifully presented garden. $169 per couple (no credit cards).

Connect

Handheld mobile service is not often not available indoors, or behind buildings. The transmitted seems mainly designed for reception on the Hume Highway.

Bundanoon is around 5km away, and has more facilities than Exeter.
