Summary

Description

Panoramic view of Baku from Dağüstü Park (with joggers running up the stairs). On the far left is the General Assembly (Milli Majlis) with its two office towers flanking the meeting chamber in between. The three glass-sheathed, flame-shaped towers are the Flame Towers which were completed in 2012. (The Baku coat of arms features three flames representing the natural wealth in oil and gas of the Absheron Peninsula.) On the right is the Yacht Club in Baku Bay. The tubular building on shore in front of the Yacht Club is actually shaped like a rolled up carpet to house the new Carpet Museum that opened in 2014. Along the water’s edge is a park and promenade known as the Bulvar. The low-rise area adjacent to the waterfront is the Old City.

Baku, the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan, is located on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula which juts out from the western coast of the Caspian Sea. At 28m/92ft below sea level, Baku is the lowest-lying national capital in the world.

The Walled City of Baku with the Shirvanshah's Palace and Maiden Tower became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

The traditional art of Azerbaijani carpet weaving was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010.
