| Description |
English: As is known, the Dutch were not the only non-Javanese in Java during the colonial period. A larger group than the Dutch was formed by the Chinese. They were already in Java when the Dutch for the first time set foot, just before 1600. Many Chinese had native concubines, so that a large group of mestizos (often called Peranakan Chinese) arose that spoke Malay or Javanese. Sometimes they were Muslim, they spoke of a shaved Chinese, because the characteristic pigtail disappeared. The Chinese had their own rituals brought on 10001017 depicted as the lantern festival. However, not all Chinese were Muslim and they worked their own temples, especially in the big cities, where simply the largest groups were Chinese. Here they played a major role in the import trade, brokering and the retail and had held various crafts. These occupations often they acquired an adequate capacity. Who was rich, had to also show and that was through contributions to the building of temples. Incidentally, there was a constant stream of gold and silver to China, where many of them were contacted, in the village of origin to build temples. (P. Orchard, 2001). The donation records seen December 2012 within the temple showed that it contributed to the temple within the last decade or two, so it may be under (part-)Chinese management.)
Nederlands: Negatief. Zoals bekend waren de Nederlanders niet de enige niet-Javanen op Java tijdens de koloniale periode. Een grotere groep dan de Nederlandse werd gevormd door de Chinezen. Zij zaten al op Java toen de Nederlanders er voor het eerst voet aan wal zetten, net voor 1600. Veel Chinezen hadden inheemse concubines, zodat er een grote groep mestiezen (veelal peranakan Chinezen genaamd) ontstond die Maleis of Javaans sprak. Soms werden ze Moslim; men sprak dan van een geschoren Chinees, omdat de zo karakteristieke haarvlecht verdween. De Chinezen hadden hun eigen rituelen meegebracht, zoals het op 10001017 afgebeelde lantaarnfeest.
Lang niet alle Chinezen werden echter Moslim en ze hadden dan ook hun eigen tempels, vooral in de grote steden, waar nu eenmaal de grootste groepen Chinezen zaten. Hier speelden ze een grote rol in de invoerhandel, de tussenhandel en de detailhandel en hadden ze diverse ambachten in handen. In deze beroepen verwierven ze vaak een behoorlijk vermogen. Wie rijk was moest dat echter ook laten zien en dat kon door bijdragen te leveren aan de bouw van tempels. Overigens ging er een constante stroom goud en zilver naar China, waar velen contact mee hielden, om in het dorp van afkomst tempels te laten bouwen. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
