| Description |
O castelo de Santiago do Cacém entrou definitivamente para a posse portuguesa em 1217, no reinado de D. Afonso II, depois de já ter sido conquistado por D. Afonso Henriques em 1158, e ser de novo conquistado pelos árabes. Esta região foi habitada, pelo menos desde a ocupação romana da península, a que se seguiram os visigodos e muçulmanos que terão construído a primeira fortificação ou melhorado a existente. Este castelo, assim como os de Almada, Palmela e Alcácer do Sal, foram doados à Ordem de Santiago, mas em 1594, durante a dinastia dos Filipes, Santiago do Cacém foi doado aos duques de Aveiro. Depois da Guerra da Restauração, a importância militar deste castelo foi-se perdendo e as suas estruturas foram-se arruinando. Classificado como Monumento Nacional, já foi intervencionado no sentido do seu restauro, por parte da Direcção-Geral dos Edifícios e Monumentos Nacionais. Esta fortificação foi construída sobre uma rectangular, conservando ainda nas suas muralhas vestígios da construção muçulmana, tem dez torres de que se destaca a Torre de Menagem. <a href="http://www.guiadacidade.pt/portugal/?G=monumentos.ver&artid=13979&distritoid=15">www.guiadacidade.pt/portugal/?G=monumentos.ver&artid=...</a>
