Description

Salt evaporation pounds (Marinhas do Sal) at Rio Maior, District of Santarem, Alentejo region, Portugal, August 2008.

These "salinas" are remarquable for 2 reasons: 1) Their location is deep inside the land, being about 30km away from the ocean coast. Underground natural channels and networks bring the salty waters from the Atlantic until there. 2) Their prehistoric age: archaeological researchs found evidences of salt harvesting dating from the neolithic period.
