This morning, after yesterdays ridiculously long day (which I will write about later), I decided to get up early once more and head towards Wareham river. The sunrise promised to be spectacular, as the clouds were broken and even by 6.45am, there was a hint of salmon in the sky. So, trying my hardest not to get in the way of the photographers with huge lenses (not a euphemism, I promise), who stood on the bridge behind me, I crouched down on a slippery rock, right on the waters edge. I don't know which of us was more likely to slip and fall helplessly into the river, me or my tripod, but we crouched there silently, clinging onto each other as I took the 3 or 4 minute long exposure to capture this image.

The sun exploded into the horizon in a burst of salmon pink. The blue hour was still all around me, the clouds tinged with mournful cobalt blue and the contrast between these two opposing colours was intense. Long exposures always offer a sense of calm, a feeling of pausing life in an image. They remove all annoyances from a photograph, things like people and sound. They render the scenery still for a moment and give images a three-dimensional feel. Just so you know, I didn't add that pink colour to the sky; thats how it looked. I assure you, no images were harmed in the filming of this...well, image.
