Haltwhistle is a small, but pleasant, town near Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland, England.

Get in

By train

Regular trains run to and from Newcastle upon Tyne, Hexham and Carlisle.

By bus

Regular buses run to and from Newcastle upon Tyne and Hexham. Friendly, helpful drivers.

Also a place to catch the bus to Once Brewed and other spots along Hadrian's Wall.

Get around

All the shops and pubs are situated on the High Street, no more than 2 minutes walk apart, with the railway station and bus stop at one end.


  • 1 Housesteads Roman Fort, Housesteads Roman Fort, Haydon Bridge, NE47 6NN (7 miles east of Haltwhistle), +44 1434 344363. Housesteads is the most complete Roman fort in Britain, and one of the best-preserved in Europe. adults £6.20, children £3.70, concessions £5.60.


  • Visit Hadrian's Wall.
  • Take a pleasant walk along the River Tyne.
  • Need a book to read early on a Sunday morning? An honour-box outside a bookstore in the high street allows you to choose a low-value book and toss your coins through the letterslot in the door.



  • Blenkinsopp Castle Inn, Greenhead, Brampton, CA8 7JS (Just off the A69 between Haltwhistle and Haltwhistle golf course), +44 1697 747601. Country pub on the Blenkinsopp estate run by a young couple serving excellent food with real ales and a decent wine list.
