Hatra, once a vibrant archaeological site of immense value in the Al Jazira region of Iraq, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. In 2015, it remains one of the most dangerous cities on Earth and is emphatically no more a tourist destination. The archaeological structures were substantial but have suffered extensive, wilful damage at the hands of ISIS extremists; much of the UNESCO-listed archaeological heritage is believed to be no longer standing.
