Map of South Kolkata

South Kolkata encompasses the neighbourhoods south of Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road (AJC Bose Road, formerly known as Lower Circular Road), many of which were developed after India's independence in 1947. Most of the region comprised different towns and villages before being incorporated into the city limits in later years.

The following neighbourhoods of South Kolkata are covered separately:

  Alipore
The land of bungalows. Home to a zoological park, the National Library, a prison-turned-museum, a mint, and several government offices.
  Ballygunge-Dhakuria
  Behala
The southwestern part of the city. Home to gems like State Archaeological Museum and one of the oldest Durga Puja celebrations in the city.
  Bhowanipore-Kalighat
  Garden Reach
The western fringe of Kolkata, home to the city's port, with a unique mini-Lucknow legacy.

Get in

[edit]

South Kolkata can be easily reached from Central Kolkata by bus, taxi, or metro railway. The number of buses is slightly lower in the North, but the metro and tram are always available. There are also bus links from further east and south.

By bus

[edit]

Like other parts of the city, buses have the most extensive coverage and are inexpensive. Air-conditioned buses also ply here, for example, from Sulekha to New Town and from Tollygunge to Kolkata Airport. There are many long-distance buses from southeastern places to the north, which avoid the city crowds and travel via the EM Bypass.

Garia has three bus stands. Garia No. 5 handles buses coming along Raja SC Mullick Road. The second bus depot handles buses coming along NSC Bose Road. There is a bus stand in Patuli, handling 45 no. private bus. The Garia-Gol Park autos leave from opposite the No. 5 Bus Stand. Garia No. 6 handles buses coming along NSC Bose Road. Buses travelling south of Garia are handled by either the No. 5 or No. 6 depots, depending on the direction they are coming from. Autos on the Garia-Tollygunge route leave from near this bus stand. There are also autos for Boral.

By metro

[edit]

South Kolkata is served by Blue  1  and Purple  3  lines. The Blue Line, in particular, is useful for getting to the northern parts of the city; however, you will need to take a car, bus, or rickshaw to get into Alipore, Ballygunge or Behala from the line.

The Blue Line once had an interchange with the Orange Line  6  at 1 Kavi Subhash (New Garia)  6  Sealdah South  Kavi Subhash metro station on Wikipedia, but its Blue Line terminal was closed on July 2025 due to cracks at the columns. Until the terminal is rebuilt, you have to travel between 2 Shahid Khudiram  1  Shahid Khudiram metro station on Wikipedia and Kavi Subhash by road to switch the two lines. Make sure the token is with you.

By local train

[edit]

Circular  runs across this district, from Ballygunge to Tollygunge, which is useful to get here from northern parts of the city. 3 Ballygunge  Circular  Sealdah South  Ballygunge Junction railway station on Wikipedia is also an important junction for local trains from South 24 Parganas.
