Lhokseumawe City is a special territory (daerah istimewa) and city of Aceh province, located in the northern part of the island of Sumatra, estimated population 179,807.

Lhokseumawe is the second largest city in Aceh Special District, in the north of Sumatra. The city covers an area of 181.06 square kilometres. Being between Banda Aceh and the large southern city of Medan, the town is a key regional centre important for the economy of Aceh.

The road from Medan to Lhokseumawe and from Banda Aceh is now reasonable. The express night buses from Medan 8 hours, 95,000 IDR, are a particularly good deal. Local day and night buses are cheaper (95,000 IDR) and take longer (6-8 hours).

The ferry from Penang to Langsa, with a capacity of 138 passengers, commenced operation onthe 21st of February.

There is no need for travel permits anymore in Lhokseumawe. Eental "becak", cars and motorcycles are available in Lhokseumawe. Lhokseumawe also has a lot public transportation.
