Location within Shanghai

Nanhui is the Southern part of the Pudong district in Shanghai; the name translates as "South sea". Pudong Airport is in this area, so this is the first part of Shanghai that most international travellers see.

Nanhui is much less developed than the downtown Pudong area to the North, but still populous (about a million), industrialised and growing. However, it is not densely populated compared to more central regions of Shanghai; the land area is quite large.

Neighborhoods

Within Nanhui are a number of areas with their own distinctive character.

Lingang New City

Down on the Southeast corner of Nanhui is a planned (by German architects) development now officially called Nanhui New City, though the older name Lingang New City or the more descriptive Shanghai Harbor City are also used. Features include a central man-made lake, a planetarium, and massive office and residential development. This area is within the Pudong Special Economic zone so it offers opportunities for foreign investment on good terms. Construction started in 2003 and is intended to be complete in 2020. As of early 2013, this area does not have metro service but line 11 is being extended to it.

Get in

Shanghai metro, Line 2, was until recently the main route into the area. However, it only goes to the northeast part, the coastal area near the airport. Line 6 cuts across the northwest corner of the area.

The recently opened Lines 11 and 16 also go into Nanhui. As of March 2015, extensions to Line 11 are in progress.

A Shanghai Disney Resort is under construction in Nanhui, scheduled to open in June 2016. Line 11 is being extended and will have a Disney stop soon. As of March 2015, the extension is built but needs testing before it is put into service.

Do

There is a safari park with a fairly large collection of animals from several continents.

Nanhui hosts a peach blossom festival (桃花节) in March and April every year.
