Historically Smurgoni was a private estate, at one time famous for an Academy which trained circus bears. In the recent century and a half, after the railway was built, Smarhon rapidly grew into an industrial town of about 37 thousand inhabitants.
The town has a train station.
- 1 St. Michael's Church. This church with a somewhat unusual floor plan was built in the early 17th century, and was originally Calvinist.
