South Yorkshire is the southern region of Yorkshire, a large northern county of England in the United Kingdom. Although forming its own administrative and ceremonial county region, South Yorkshire is traditionally considered part of the ancient West Riding of Yorkshire.

Sheffield, nicknamed the "steel city", is the unofficial 'capital' of the region. As well as its globally renowned industrial heritage (and cutlery), the city also has a solid musical and cultural scene, having produced in the past such acts as Arctic Monkeys, The Human League and Pulp. Doncaster, home to one of the oldest horse racecourses in the country, also attracts substantial numbers of tourists. Bordering Derbyshire and Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire is regarded by many as the true beginning of England's characteristic 'north'.

Map of South Yorkshire

  • Barnsley - a working class former mining town
  • Doncaster - a regenerating town, most widely known for its racecourse
  • Rotherham - an industrial and steel-making town

Other destinations

South Yorkshire is completely landlocked and largely hilly, being situated over the central range of the Pennines.
