Since 1967 part of Milton Keynes, Stony Stratford is a charming and picturesque market town in the county of Buckinghamshire. It boasts a number of fabulous British pubs serving good food and beer, a good variety of quaint shops to browse and beautiful river walks just behind the high street. Stony Stratford claims to be the place of origin of the term ‘Cock & Bull Story’.

Get in

Stony Stratford is at the northeast corner of Milton Keynes, at the end of Watling Street (historically a Roman road). By car, leave the A5 at Old Stratford; from the M1 at junction 14 and follow Childs Way east as far Watling Street then go north; from East or west take the A422. By train, alight at Milton Keynes Central railway station and take a number 6 bus.

Get around

You can walk the whole way around Stony Stratford and there is a comprehensive bus service linking it to nearby Wolverton, to the city centre and to Bletchley, as well as other surrounding towns and villages.

See

A number of buildings in the 'Arts and Crafts' style, notably The Plough pub, 'The Retreat' alms houses and 'Nisi Domus' beside the RC Church.

Do

Visit one of the many traditional pubs for a good meal, pint of beer and to warm yourself by the open fire.

Treat yourself to an English fry-up at Kay’s Kitchen.

Take a scenic walk by the river which runs around the town (access from Silver Street or the bridge to Old Stratford. A leaflet giving a guided walk around the town is available from the library on Church Street.

Make sure you stop at the Cock and the Bull pubs, from where it is believed the term ‘Cock & Bull Story’ began in the late 18th/early 19th Century.

Buy

The High Street boasts a good selection of knick-knack, hardware and clothing shops, but all are independent.

Stony Stratford has a fabulous number of eateries. Whether you fancy a curry, Thai, Chinese, Italian or some simple pub grub, you will not be disappointed.

Often the scene of many a pub-crawl, you will not find it hard to track down a beer or glass of wine.
