merger[edit]

    • According to Wikipedia, it was to be closed by 2012, but now it is expected to be 2020, in 2021, or who knows? Given that there is interst in including in Wikipedia more history about airports of Berlin, merging this article would lead to loading more stuff about airports into a major city article that is already very airport-focussed. What does Wikipedia have to do with anything? You mean Wikivoyage, I guess? My point is that an article that won't exist in a couple of years is somewhat of a waste of time. Plus, Tegel is a really simple airport to get around, one of the simplest that's not tiny. It's really a perfect example of an airport that doesn't need its own article. And the tortured history of the new airport that's been built for so long in Berlin is an important part of current-day Berlin history and not just some routine airport history. I will support merging this article back into Berlin. It's not that much information, won't be needed for too long, and Tegel, like I said, is extremely simple to get around. I quote Wikipedia as my source. There are other sources out there. If you have better information on Tegel's closing, please add it.
The possibility that it may close in a few years (with its history, it is not a given) is not a good argument for deletingbtge article now.
The question is, just how much airport history and politics should go into a city article? I think that Berlin is a large enough city and its airports collectively are complicated enough to warrant a Berlin airports article incorporating this article. Ground Zero (talk) 13:47, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The new airport will open 31. October 2020. TXL has to be shut down no later than six months after the opening of BER's southern runway which is planned for 4.November 2020. Hobbitschuster (talk) 14:41, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • For the record, I oppose the merger proposal, per GZ's point: "Berlin is a large enough city and its airports collectively are complicated enough to warrant a Berlin airports article". Ibaman (talk) 15:18, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Well maybe then we should make an Berlin Airports article, not this... Hobbitschuster (talk) 16:13, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

....?? I thought we had already started "Berlin Airports", I remember writing that I'd be happy to contribute, that (you, Hobbitschuster, said that) Johannisthal must be mentioned... how mystifying... Ibaman (talk) 16:43, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
We don't have any "[name of city] airports" articles, to my knowledge, and I think previous suggestions of including information about more than one airport in the same article that's not a city or district article have been shot down (I remember when a "New York Area Airports" article was proposed), so if approved, this would be the first, but I think we ought to discuss the idea at Wikivoyage talk:Airport Expedition. Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:25, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No consensus ever emerged and thus no further work was done... Hobbitschuster (talk) 12:33, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I hereby nominate this article for deletion effective the not so far off date when flights cease at TXL Hobbitschuster (talk) 05:44, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If it remains in use for general aviation, it should be redirected to Berlin. Otherwise, yeah. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:22, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Keeping it open for general aviation would fly in the face of published plans to put people's houses there and r&d... Hobbitschuster (talk) 14:40, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If the airport is closed and replaced with something else, there would be no reason to keep the article. But for due diligence, we should have a Vfd thread then, lest someone wants to make some kind of argument for archiving this information (though I'm not sure why; we don't have a historical article about Tempelhof Airport). Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:12, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
We do keep archived versions of Olympic Games articles, for example. But once it is closed, a redirect to Berlin makes sense, with the historical information merged into the airport's Wikipedia article. I don't think the Berlin travel guide is the right places for historical information about a closed airport. Ground Zero (talk) 15:39, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

VFD nomination[edit]

There is nothing to merge and an article on a dead airport serves no purpose whatsoever. Hobbitschuster (talk) 19:50, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • We can revisit this in several years, or if Tegel is turned into something that's of separate interest to visit. Right now, the closure of Tegel is recent enough for it to be a service to some travelers to have a redirect. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:26, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
