Under =='See'== - # The eccentric culture of Crete in the traditional cafes (kafeneia). # - this needs some explanation - what is eccentric about the culture?

My dearest 210.50.143.21, I believe the offensive term you are looking is [1]. Take a look in the mirror and have a nice day! (WT-en) Jpatokal 00:01, 5 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Crete location

crete is not located in southern Aegean sea, but in Cretian sea (kritiko pelagos) which is south of Aegean and North of teh Libyan Sea

Wikipedia has Crete at the southern end of Aegean sea. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 13:34, 15 Feb 2006 (EST)

Thats incorrect and funny, even the map they use locates Crete in the sea of Crete.. (WT-en) Stevepeterson 13:10, 16 Feb 2006 (EST)

I've chimed in by adding "in the Mediterranean Sea" for people who might not know where the other seas are (there are probably a lot of them!) I've also changed "favourite" to "favorite"; Wikivoyage standard is the the English language pages should have American spellings. (WT-en) Sailsetter 12:10, 16 March 2008 (EDT)

Sleep

I took out the listing for Rethymno hostel, since it didn't give an address, any contact information, or a web page for it. If anyone wants to put it back, please include at least an address and/or location description. (WT-en) Sailsetter 16:39, 26 March 2008 (EDT)

Do

I've moved the listing for the Thalassocosmos Acquarium to the Heraklion page; since it's only a few miles out of Heraklion and not near any other major towns or attractions, travelers will no doubt go to it as a side trip out of Heraklion, so it belongs there. I've also rewritten it to remove touting, and I've removed the associated large picture of a fish in a tank, which could be anywhere in the world and thus isn't in compliance with the Wikivoyage policy of having a minimum number of clearly relevant pictures. (WT-en) Sailsetter 19:08, 7 April 2008 (EDT)

Sleep

I've removed the reference to beeinnet.com again. This listing is clearly not in compliance with the Wikivoyage policy on External links, which prohibits linking to "Hotel or travel booking services / aggregators", which that site most certainly is. And it says right on the editing page, immediately below the box you have to type listing into:

"Wikivoyage has strong guidelines on links to external web sites. Links to booking engines, hotel and restaurant aggregator sites, or other third-party sites will be deleted."

I was also going to remove the Kalliope Studios listing since it's already on the Chania page, but then I changed my mind and left it for the moment. I'm not sure what the policy is for arranging listings on a region with cities, like Crete -- should all the listings for a city go under that city and not on the region page, comparably to how they're arranged in huge-city/district pages, or what? Any comments? (WT-en) Sailsetter 10:29, 19 April 2008 (EDT)

And I removed the beeinnett.com yet again as well as the link to the aggegator site holiday2greece.com. Will the persons adding these please read the policies above, and if they think they don't apply to these sites, please explain why here. Otherwise I or others will just keep removing them whenever we notice them. (WT-en) Sailsetter

Prefectures

In line with the current redistricting of Greece into simpler regions (done after discussion) I propose to delete the "Prefectures" section from the Crete page and also to delete all the linked Prefecture pages. They don't add any information that isn't (or at least that shouldn't) be elsewhere and just needlessly complicate the structure. (WT-en) Sailsetter 11:47, 25 August 2008 (EDT)

I've deleted the prefectures section. At some point the pages should be deleted too. (WT-en) Sailsetter 12:41, 12 September 2008 (EDT)

I did my best on drive, drink and food...

I did my best on drink and food.

I am a resident of Crete since born. I recently gathered some references on traveling and finally got the spherical point of view to add some info here.

no "Ashleighton ruth - veronica pennington" statue on North, South, East or West(!). (who on earth are they anyway?)

See

There are two entreis for Gramvousa and Gramvoussa. Needs te be reworked. There is also Meri Gramvoussa and Agria Gramvoussa. Seems one entry for these places would be better.CustodianAtEYE (talk) 01:22, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikitravel Crete

I am a resident of Crete, and took on the project of editing that flawed document in Wikitravel a couple months ago. What is here in Wikivoyage is the flawed document before I began working on it - with all its warts & errors. What is the solution to this problem? I am not going to edit two documents. One is enough work for someone with a full-time job. Can I copy & paste? —The preceding comment was added by 94.71.94.136 (talkcontribs)

Yes. If you were the editor of that page on Wikitravel, then you have the rights to the text you added (not any other text). However, when adding the content, in the "Summary", include a link to the edit history of the page on Wikitravel. This is because the license for the content of the site requires attribution of the authors/editors. Unfortunately, the content on Wikivoyage was imported from Wikitravel at the beginning of August 2012. It was at that time that Wikitravel turned off the interface that allowed easy reuse of the sites content. Wikivoyage went live with content in November and so there may have been some edits to the page that differ with the Wikitravel version. I (and the rest of us at Wikivoyage) are sorry about this, but the owners of Wikitravel were becoming increasingly authoritarian about the way things were done and didn't invest any time in maintaining the site (lots of tech problems) and that drove all the active users to support a fork of the project. Wikimedia has been very supportive of this effort and the project to create a free travel guide that anyone can edit has a much brighter future than what languishes at Wikitravel. For more about the differences between the sites, you can have a look at Wikivoyage:Wikivoyage and Wikitravel and a good blog post from a former Wikitravel user (although not very active anymore with Wikivoyage) here. AHeneen (talk) 20:38, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the answer. I will continue work on the wikitravel page I started. It was so flawed that by the time I am done, I will have rewritten the entire thing. Then I will move it over here. ...As a matter of fact, I just noticed on the wikitravel talk page that my question about the wikivoyage page was removed. Sheesh. I may just work on this one instead. http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/User:Safarisue

I have made a number of changes & additions. I don't think I need to add a link to the Wikitravel edit page, as everything is my original work. The few sentences I left as is in the history section were already here on the Wikivoyage page. Correct?

Cities

As a start. I rewrote the introduction & edited the Cities section. Added a number of cities & rewrote bad info on others.

Other Destinations

Added Lasithi Plateau. More to add later.

Agriculture & Tourism

Added subject

Orientation

Added info on upper & lower villages. Added info on how the roads are set up. Added caveat that certain areas attract or market to certain nationalities.

History

Rewritten. 95% original work. Left in a few sentences that were okay.

Talk

Completely rewritten. Badly flawed & incomplete.

Medical Care

Added subject.

Travelers with Physical Disabilities

Added subject

Smoking

Added subject

Cities

This was on the page suggesting clean up. "Style This article or section does not match our manual of style or needs other editing. Please plunge forward, give it your attention and help it improve! Suggested fixes: This section should be trimmed down with only one sentence per city." I have removed the Style note, reduced the number of cities & changed each city's description to one sentence.

Place Name Spellings

Added this at the top before listing regions, cities & other locations because there are a number of ways the same place may be spelled. There are errors & inconsistencies within wikivoyage pages, and I don't know how to correct them. For instance, Rethymnon Prefecture is spelled Rethymno on the Crete oage. The former is correct in this context. Similarly, the city of Rethymnon has its own page spelled Rethymno. The former is correct. Additionally, the reference to the Rethymnon city page within the Crete article is linked to the spelling Rethimno - not at all correct. I am trying to put the most accepted Roman alphabet spellings in the Crete document, but since I don't know how to change the links, there will still be inconsistencies. If anyone can help, thanks! —The preceding comment was added by Safarisue (talkcontribs)

At the top right hand corner next to the search box, there's a clickable arrow where you have the option to move a page. I'm a little confused with the different spellings of Rethymno versus Rethymnon myself, as even the official tourism page switches back and forth. I assume that's because of the Greek grammar rules you've mentioned? I've changed Rethymno Prefecture to Rethymnon Prefecture, but you can try it out for Rethymno. Thanks for the information on Crete! -- torty3 (talk) 14:36, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tips! Will try over the next few days. And yes, the spelling differences are grammatical. "Rethymnon is the subject of the sentence." "I am going to Rethymno." "This is the beach of Rethymnou."

Getting Around

BY CAR. Completely rewrote. Existing info was incomplete & much was inaccurate.

Table of Contents

I thought there was one here, but apparently not. Will try to get one up in the next week. Going on a road trip for a couple days.

Sleep

Completely re-did Sleep section. Copied some from my own work on wikitravel. Described the types of lodging available & listed a few specific example of types.

Stay Healthy

Trimmed down content & made it more relevant to visitors.

See & Do

Completely redid these two sections. They were long, repetitive lists that provided little guidance for how a traveler might arrange their visit. It looked like anyone who ever visited Crete decided to go in & add the particular place they liked. These two sections are now more general lists that can be expanded in regional & city pages.

Stay Healthy

Trimmed down content & made it more relevant to visitors.

Eat & Drink

Revised to be more organized. Not sure if I've gone overboard, but it is about the same length as the previous, less organized, version. Feedback?
