Purpose of this topic[edit]

I know of other ferries that could be listed, but Wikivoyage tends to frown upon mere lists. So what should we do with this article? Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:54, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes a list for list sake does not bring much, can do that at Wikipedia. But something that highlights interesting ferry trips for tourists or non-typical boats. Staten Island ferry obviously comes to mind, maybe the Balboa island ferry in Newport Beach, what boats run up the north west coastline? --Traveler100 (talk) 08:39, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There are ferries to Martha's Vineyard, Block Island, and one from Port Jefferson, Long Island to Bridgeport, Connecticut. I'm sure there are a bunch more. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:48, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There are also other ferries to Manhattan, from different places in New Jersey and Brooklyn. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:49, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I seriously loved taking the ferries in Seattle everywhere they went. I do have to ask myself however why that experience needs bundling with New York or any other American city? I would suggest this article on a more regional basis... --Andrewssi2 (talk) 10:00, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I tend to agree. However, this article was created by a new user, so let's not rush to do anything. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:28, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

So let's merge then?[edit]

3½ years on, this article hasn't gone anywhere. It's still just an incomplete list with no information that couldn't be moved to a city or region article.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 15:51, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Merge where? Hobbitschuster (talk) 20:56, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Any information here which is not present in a relevant destination article to be moved there, and this page to be redirected to USA. Or it could be VFD'd, for all I care, as long as none of the information here is needed elsewhere, and thus requiring attribution.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 21:20, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to see it divided into regions, if possible—ferries in New England, etc. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 00:10, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It's certainly possible, but the lack of edits to this national article suggest such regional articles wouldn't receive much love either. And really, what is the point in a travel guide listing all the ferries in New England? Such a page lacks the common purpose of articles such as Ferries in the Mediterranean (where the objective is to document all the ways of crossing the Med) and Ferry routes to Great Britain (where the objective is to document all maritime points of access to Britain). Most are not an attraction in themselves, just a means of getting from A to B.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 00:16, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ferries in the Great Lakes, if that is a thing, I could support as a legitimately useful travel topic.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 00:18, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I support a merger, and I don't really see the point of a regional article. Seeing the USA in your Chevrolet is a thing. Seeing the USA by rail us a thing. You really can't see the USA by ferry. Its just not a comprehensive enough network. Ground Zero (talk) 00:28, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'm taking a closer look, now. The content about California could perhaps go somewhere, with collaboration. Otherwise, the information goes by state and could likely go in each state's article. I'm beginning to think a merge is actually the right decision for most or all of the content. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 13:17, 17 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, merge this pointless list that is doomed to not have any substantial content, and belongs better in the respective region/state/city articles. --Bigpeteb (talk) 16:42, 12 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
