Name

On seeing the name of this article, I expected it to be solely about Japan, so I was taken aback that it is a very generalized topic about the whole world. I am not familiar with the word omiyage. Is it nonetheless a commonplace English word somewhere, such that it fulfills the Wikivoyage:Naming conventions guidelines? I would suggest not, and I would therefore propose to rename it "Gift giving" or something similar. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:16, 18 April 2025 (UTC)

Wiktionary only lists it in the Japanese context; my dead-wood dictionaries don't include the word. Thus I suppose you are right. Gift redirects here. What about simply calling the article Gifts? Omiyage might still be mentioned in bold in the lead, as it is an important concept especially in Japan and should be covered well, or just in the appropriate section. –LPfi (talk) 08:48, 18 April 2025 (UTC)

It shouldn't be generalised to all gift giving. Travellers probably know what they family expect from them when they are returning (or for birthday gifts if they never left).

Pasalubong seems to be relevant to describe only for travellers who return to the Philippines. They should at least have some idea of what their local friends or family over there expect. We might describe it to the extent it is relevant for people going there repeatedly, having the same neighbours and favourite café but not really getting to know the culture.

I don't see Pasalubong as very different from what is expected over here. We might add a mention on people perhaps expecting gifts on one's return to Travel basics.

+1, this should be at Gift giving. Omiyage is not the right term even in Japanese, since it refers specifically to bringing gifts back from travels; bringing flowers to dinner is not "omiyage". Jpatokal (talk) 21:34, 18 April 2025 (UTC)

Small thing about omiyage as a reply to the edit comment. You don't necessarily need to travel abroad. If someone from Tokyo goes on holiday in Hokkaido and brings back souvenirs to give out, that's still omiyage. And it's not unique to Japan. In Singapore, when we travel, it's usually considered polite to bring back some snacks for your friends, relatives and colleagues. For instance, if you return from a trip to Taiwan, people would generally be expecting some pineapple cakes. The dog2 (talk) 17:08, 21 April 2025 (UTC)
