[edit]- A nice friendly country. Good food, lovely beaches, great place for a getaway.
Hotel listings
[edit]There should be no listings for hotels or any other specific accommodations in guides for nations. For the convenience of anyone who wants to copy and paste any listing into the guide to the relevant locality (note: only one per listing!), I have copied all the listings below; however, most are touty, so I would generally advise against cutting and pasting these listings verbatim:

[edit]I partly disagree with what is written about the spoken languages in Mauritius. Creole is definitely the most spoken language but Bhojpuri (not French) is the second widely spoken language. This can be understood as more than 60% Mauritians trace their ancestry from Bhojpuri speaking areas of India. Bhojpuri remained the lingua franca for the 70% of Indo Mauritians for quite long. French & English are used for official purpose to a limited extent; French is used mostly in the spoken form while English is used in the written form. However, both are understood/spoken quite well by most Mauritians. The percentage of Tamils in Mauritius is questionable and it is hard to believe that Tamils speak Tamil in Mauritius. Really strange why this was stated and no such approach was accorded to other ethnic groups and their languages like Telegu, Marathi, Urdu, Bhojpuri, Hakka, etc.

- The Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie claims 72.7% of Mauritians were French speakers in 2005. According to Wikipedia: Creole and Bhojpuri are the main languages used at home, both French and Creole are used in a business context and English is used most in schools and governments. French and English, which have long enjoyed greater social status, are favored in educational and professional settings.(WT-en) AHeneen
Most young Mauritians do not speak Bhojpuri or tamils nowadays
Is crime increasing or decreasing?
[edit]I just reverted an edit that was problematic in terms of how it read in English, but it contained a claim that is worth discussing: That crime has been decreasing in Mauritius in recent years. The previous (and now current) version of the "Stay safe" section asserts that crime has been increasing in recent years and gives specific examples in the second paragraph. I've never visited Mauritius. What is the current situation, in fact, and what are the crime figures for the last few years? Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:05, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
Crime rate
[edit]I have modify the section the 'Stay Safe' section which says that, Crime levels in Mauritius are getting higher, by adding However, despite the level of crime has been decreasing over the years according to statistics, as elsewhere, tourist are normally more vulnerable to theft. a user told me to discuss it on the talk page. Here are the statistics given in the government police website shown that crime are decreasing in mauritius, 2009 to 2010 (see p.4), for 2010 to 2011 (see p.3), i have try to find for 2012 and other years in the gov website but it is not available, however i found articles from various major press in mru (see ), for 2007 to 2008 (see ), for 2007 to 2010 . Also i try to make some improvement but it was remove completely without explaining why, i must point out that the content of this section is the point of view of the foreign and commonwealth office, the whole has been exactly copy from its website which is copyright.
- It looks to me like you've documented your point. The reason I reverted your edits is directly above this section: Your edits didn't read well in English. I will insert your point that the crime rate has been decreasing, however. Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:26, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
- I have inserted points that you made in the edit that I reverted. Please look over the current version of the "Stay safe" section. If there's anything you don't like about the wording, feel free to either edit it in the article or post about it here in the talk page (in which case, I or someone else will look over your post and will insert any content that looks helpful to visitors). Thanks for working with me. Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:37, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
Removing regions for now
[edit]I am removing the regions section from the article. We only have 7 Mauritius destination articles so far, so there is absolutely no reason we should organize those into 10 empty region articles. Texugo (talk) 20:41, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
The island is divided into nine districts plus several independent minor islands.
What to do with listings
[edit]If this article is really being treated as a country template, no specific listings whatsoever should be in it. This is most relevant to the "See" section, but the "Do" section also shouldn't have bullets and shouldn't list specific places, such as La Vanille Réserve des Mascareignes. Anyway, what the hell do we do with the "See" listings? Would it serve the traveller best to just remove them all? Are they currently listed in any city articles? Peanuts, alcohol and fish
[edit]Can someone please elaborate, why the following advice is given in the "Stay healthy" section:
"It is important not to eat peanuts or take alcohol if you eat coral or reef fish like sea bass, snapper, mullet, grouper, there are many more."
Thanks. 2A02:C7D:2FC3:CA00:2CE5:7D80:871A:F2FE 22:54, 12 September 2016 (UTC)
