Split[edit]

I kept the Kurils and Sakhalin together in one article, since a) they both comprise one unified oblast, and b) we had little to no content on either. But now the Sakhalin information is getting quite good, and since they are separated by large barren seas, I think it would be reasonable to split this article into two — one about the Kurils and one about Sakalin. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 14:47, 1 September 2008 (EDT)

I don't know - I've been working pretty hard on the city guides on Sakhalin (though it's still a work in progress), but I also tried to do some research on the Kurils (which I never got to visit, in part out of lacking information). And the information is very very hard to come by - and the place isn't exactly crammed with tourists - just check the Yuzhno-Kurilsk article - that's two days worth of research :o/

So i don't think any articles on the Kurils will improve anytime soon. Also i only visited Kholmsk, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, and Korsakov - so I'm not gonna improve on any other city guides (besides the fact, that I still think these guides leave a lot to be desired - and gonna be keep working on these cities.

Anyway - just so you know, I'm not really objecting or anything - just for information.

Understood—I've also tried to research these destinations to very little avail. But I had no clue you would come along and do a great job fixing up several Sakhalin guides, and it's always possible we could be surprised by a new knowledgeable contributor to the Kuril Islands. Either way, I still think it's best to separate them — the only thing that unites them is their administrative status. Another benefit, is if another contributor comes along who happened to do some work in Okha for example, we might get Sakhalin up to a high enough quality to feature it as an Off the Beaten Path Destination of the Month. And it's possible a local will write about the area, which I'll definitely translate to English. Lastly, all bets are off if I win the lottery and buy an ocean-ready yacht! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 18:39, 1 September 2008 (EDT)
Right, and thanks for the praise :-) But shouldn't regions be kept to Sakhalin and the Kurils? instead of listing all the islands - especially since they have no content? (WT-en) Sertmann 14:50, 5 September 2008 (EDT)
I'm tempted to turn Sakhalin Oblast into a disambiguation style page, with links to the two region pages: one for Sakhalin, and one for Kuril Islands. That way we could separate our good Sakhalin content from our non-existent Kuril content. And we could list them separately on Far Eastern Russia. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 14:57, 5 September 2008 (EDT)

sounds good to me (WT-en) Sertmann 17:07, 5 September 2008 (EDT)
