Mauritian Creole ("Kreol Morisyen") is the language that evolved from French and influences of other languages to become the most commonly spoken language in Mauritius today. It is spoken by around 1.2 million in Mauritius and Mauritian expats worldwide. Nevertheless, it still has no official recognition anywhere. Although it is claimed that English, African and even South Asian languages have had their influence on Mauritian Creole, this is mostly limited to a handful of vocabulary. Mauritian Creole can be regarded as a simple form of French and is very easy to learn for most speakers of European languages as it gets by almost without grammar.

Although English and French are the official languages of Mauritius, only by speaking Mauritian Creole can the tourist truely whiz a smile onto the local's face and created that "since you speak our language" advantage when bargaining.

Pronunciation guide

As of 2010, Mauritan has no official recognition and thus no official way of writing. There are vague plans to introduce it as a subject for primary school pupils.

An overview of phrases can go here. Note that the phrases sections listed below are in a general order of how important they are, and how a traveler would need them. Thus, transportation comes before hotels, which in turn come before restaurants. This ordering is arbitrary but may be helpful. Do not translate phrases word for word; instead, give the nearest common equivalent in the language. Keep sentences polite, but as short as possible. Give alternatives if a traveler is likely to encounter them.

The following is a phrase guide from English to English; in a real phrase guide, the second part of each entry would be in the target language, and the third part would be an English-like pronunciation suggestion.
