My opinionated Seattle itinerary

If you have...

1 day: see the landmarks

• Pike Place Market
• Waterfront
• Space Needle and Seattle Center

2 days: explore the neighborhoods

• Walk around, have a nice meal, and hang out in whichever district sounds most interesting. I'm most partial to Capitol Hill, Ballard, Fremont, and Greenlake.
• Spend a few hours at a museum. My favorite is the Museum of Flight, but the Seattle Center museums and the Underground Tours are worthwhile too, and my off-the-beaten-path recommendation for nerds is the Connections Museum.

3 days: go outside

• Get out on the water! You can rent a kayak/paddleboard/boat/hot tub on Lake Union, take a ferry to West Seattle, Bainbridge Island or Bremerton and back, or day-cruise Elliott Bay.
• Walk and picnic through one of Seattle's many elegant parks. The Arboretum has the most diverse plant life, Gasworks Park has urb-ex vibes, Green Lake has the best walking path and people-watching, and Carkeek Park and Seward Park are both forest-like and on the water.
• If the weather is bad, you can always hole up in an independent coffee shop or inside the Seattle Central Library. The ferry rides are still nice in a watch-the-storm-roll-in kind of way, and Snoqualmie Falls might be popping off.

If you want to be outdoorsy for...

a day trip:

• Mountains to Sound Greenway (spring-summer-autumn) describes the best day hikes along I-90 towards Snoqualmie Pass. Some of them are accessible by public bus!
• Leavenworth (year-round) is the best mountain resort town anywhere near Seattle. There aren't really any other developed resort villages deep in the Washington Cascades like there are in other regions.
• Deception Pass State Park (spring-summer-autumn) on the way to Vancouver has the best effort-reward ratio for natural coastal scenery.

2 days:

• Mount Rainier National Park (summer-early autumn) is even grander up close.
• San Juan Islands (spring-summer-autumn) will immerse you in rural seascapes.
• A roadtrip around the whole North Cascade Loop.

3 days:

• Olympic National Park (year-round)
• Mount Rainier plus Mount St. Helens (summer-early autumn) on the way to Portland.
