Blog comment and response[edit]

Hi Evan,

I've moderated your comment on my blog - didn't realise quite who you were at the time! - and posted a response. How did you come upon my blog by the way? (WT-en) Snecklifter 17:40, 18 March 2007 (EDT)

Call me ASAP[edit]

Hi Evan,

Can you call me ASAP on my cell: 819-712-2813. I have some important decisions to make this week regarding the multilingual wiki project, and I can't make them without knowing more about your level of interest.

I will leave a message on Michele-Ann's page also.

Thx

Alain

Evan, can you have a look at this, it looks most strange on my IE7 - only about 1/6 of the words show. Is it the same on your screen? -- (WT-en) DanielC 15:42, 2 February 2007 (EST)

Flickr[edit]

Hi. I asked a question about Flickr at wts:WtTech:Add_ImportFreeImages_extension. Not sure if that's the right place, and more importantly not sure if you'd notice it so I'm pinging you here. -- (WT-en) Jonboy 10:36, 3 February 2007 (EST)

Willy on wheels[edit]

User:(WT-en) Joseph Stalin is making life hell for all on wikivoyage. Please bump him off the site. ---(WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 09:38, 6 February 2007 (EST)

I think the storm has passed. Willy's been a minor annoyance on Wikivoyage for several years, and we've managed to survive so far. I have to admit that I actually like the way that Wikivoyagers band together and deal with this kind of nuisance. Together we are stronger and more powerful than any single vandal can be.
I'm not a big fan of user bans; they are pretty ineffective on an open site like a wiki, where anyone can just go create a new account. Also, Willy is looking for attention, and a user ban is just the kind of ineffectual authoritarian action that he loves. In my opinion, the best thing to do is expend minimal effort: sweep up patiently after him and avoid personal interactions.
You may disagree; we have a Project:User ban nominations page if you want to nominate someone for a ban. Just remember: the point isn't to move some page to some other name; it's to get under our skin. --(WT-en) Evan 09:43, 6 February 2007 (EST)

Site problems[edit]

I think this CNN report about a hacking attack may be the explanation behind those site problems I reported yesterday. See [1]. -- (WT-en) Andrew H. (Sapphire) 03:08, 7 February 2007 (EST)

Evan, could you please comment on my last question in Talk:Greece#ferry schedule and routes? See bottom of the discussion. Thank you. --(WT-en) DenisYurkin 22:10, 8 February 2007 (EST)

St.Petersburg[edit]

Dear Evan,

I see you removed a list of cities where crime rates are considerably higher than St.Petersburg. I was shocked when I read some of the misleading and offensive rubbish in the article. Then I thought to compare it to other city articles like London where I find a much better balanced view. I respect your opinion regarding the list of countries you removed but I really feel St.Petersburg needs to be put in context so I have made the list less quantitative and more qualitative. I am in a position to comment on these maters since I live in the city for 6 months of the year and own several apartments there.

Regards, Oliver

Hi, Oliver. I understand your point; I removed the longer list because I thought the point was made fine without it. It's probably not necessary to get into a long discussion of the general state of murder rates world-wide on the St. Petersburg page. Thanks a lot for your work. --(WT-en) Evan 20:58, 10 February 2007 (EST)

OpenID[edit]

Hi Evan. Got your note on WikiOutdoors. I am open to your suggestion (pun intended!). I'll put a note in our forums section on technology so Michael sees the request. He'll be in touch probably via talk page to discuss the details. Thanks! (WT-en) Kirasw 14:11, 11 February 2007 (EST)

I'm glad you were able to identify the value of my suggestion. (Teehee!) My friend Enid will be happy to hear about it. I'll use my pen to write her a note. B-) Anyways, he can contact me on my WikiOutdoors talk page. --(WT-en) Evan 09:20, 12 February 2007 (EST)
Evan, Just a quick update on Open ID and WikiOutdoors. We are in the process of updating to the latest version of the wikicode. Our outdated version would require significant modifications to your extension; as such implementing it has been put on hold until we are using version 1.9. I'll keep you updated with our progress. -Michael

I’m writing from Lonely Planet, one of the largest travel media companies in the world. I see that you will be attending South x Southwest Interactive in March. Chris Boden, our Director of Global Business Development and Blake Hutchinson, Director of Partnerships and Licensing will also be attending on behalf of Lonely Planet. They would like to meet up with you while at the conference to discuss opportunities for partnerships as Lonely Planet is moving more into the digital space. Are you available on Monday, March 12th, in the afternoon? I can best be reached by email at amy.todd@lonelyplanet.com. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 63.80.104.24 (talkcontribs)

WIKIWYG Help[edit]

Hey Evan,

I contacted a Mr. Jason Richey in regards to help with applying wikiwyg, and he told me it would be best to get your help.

Im currently in a coop position for the Government of Canada, and am trying to give a good enough impression to go full time. One of the tasks they have given me is to implement a wysiwyg editor into a wiki. I tried the whole FCKeditor thing however path issues are causing it not to work or the wiki itself.

I found some files, however have no idea if they are the right ones, or how to even go about installing everything. Any and all help is truly appreciated and I sincerely thank you for just taking the time to read this.

- Peter M

ParserFunctions[edit]

Hi Evan, could we install the extension "ParserFunctions"? Then we would be able to make fancy templates, like the automatic generation of a map showing the location of a city, or converting the climate-tables from plain text to a diagram. I made a "offical" request on shared:. Thanks! --(WT-en) Flip666 13:29, 17 February 2007 (EST)

We already have a system for making maps, and we already have ParserFunctions installed. I'll check your request, though.--(WT-en) Evan 19:44, 17 February 2007 (EST)
Thanks, I didn't test it on de:, it works fine there. Sorry. --(WT-en) Flip666 15:17, 23 February 2007 (EST)

copyleft[edit]

spam filter[edit]

Hi Evan - the spam filter seems to be disabled after the upgrade. Talk:Main Page got hit with something that should have been blocked, and I was able to add a spam pattern to a sandbox page. -- (WT-en) Ryan 00:03, 22 February 2007 (EST)

That's weird. OK, I'll take a look. --(WT-en) Evan 00:14, 22 February 2007 (EST)
Until it's working again, I've protected Talk:Main Page. -- (WT-en) Colin 00:15, 22 February 2007 (EST)
OK, it seems to be working again. The problem was that for some reason the upgrade script deleted MediaWiki:spamwhitelist and MediaWiki:spamblacklist -- the two MW messages that let the spam filter know where to look for its whitelist and blacklist respectively. (That lets the names be translated for non-English WT versions). I've restored the pages -- I'll look to see what other language versions need. --(WT-en) Evan 00:24, 22 February 2007 (EST)

proposal to set up wikivoyage abbreviations page[edit]

hi evan, what about starting a page to list all the abbreviations of wikivoyage-specific vocabulary. You know, MoS, DotM, CoW, OTBP and that sort of stuff. Please let me know what you think on this on this talk page, I'll have it on my watchlist. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 08:35, 22 February 2007 (EST)

2 step watch/unwatch[edit]

So a while back someone was asking about this in the pub, and according to Mark it looked unlikely... though when I was just patrolling some edits, I notice on the "this page has been patrolled" page there was an "unwatch" tab up top... and I was able to toggle back and forth with one click, no confirmations. Also when I'm editing a page on my watchlist it shows that option. But if I'm just looking at a page on my watchlist, it still just shows the "watch" tab as it always was, and is followed by a confirm page. Can this be fixed? That's a super new feature, I hope so! (WT-en) - Cacahuate 18:26, 22 February 2007 (EST)

The inconsistency has been fixed; we're back to the good ol' watch/unwatch tab, with the extra commit page. There's a new option for [[:wikipedia:AJAX|]-based watching, and I'm going to experiment with it to see if it work. If so, I'll roll it out here. --(WT-en) Evan 07:26, 23 February 2007 (EST)

Interwikis from hu: and eo: to ca: and fi: also still don't work. (WT-en) Strapontin 15:49, 26 February 2007 (EST)
I just figured out what's going on -- my interwiki scripts were using my old file for languages. I've fixed it so the correct languages are shown, and I've restarted memcached and cleared caches to fix any existing problems. Thanks for the notice. --(WT-en) Evan 15:59, 26 February 2007 (EST)

Evan I'm looking for new business ideas, being jobless and all... and one that involves travel would be great... in short, I'm applying for the t-shirt stand job... p.s., I grew up in Midland, and have actually been to Lubbock... bet you don't hear that often... Template:Related rendering incorrectly?[edit]

Is it just me or is the related template rendering as raw &lt ;relatedpages&gt ; (spaces added intentionally), eg Zion, Royal Natal National Park, Blyde River Canyon

I restored the MW template that was deleted during the upgrade. Currently, the site is purging the cache and whatever else it does so it may take a moment before everything is working right. -- (WT-en) Sapphire(Talk) • 16:07, 23 February 2007 (EST)

My real name[edit]

Hi Evan,

I've read your question on your pages but I haven't seen any option to leave you a comment, so I come here to let you know the answer.

I confirm that Carme Pla is my real name. Carme is the catalan version of the more widely spread "Carmen", thanks to the opera by Bizet. Pla is a common name in Catalunya; one famous writer with this name was Josep Pla.

By the way, thanks again for your support with the launch of the !!!

((WT-en) Carmepla 03:41, 25 February 2007 (EST))

Carme: it's a lovely name. I just realized that it was phrase in a language I have had only brief experience with, and I was assuming your blog title was your personal name, when it could very likely mean "What's Happening Today" or "My Thoughts" or something. Good to know I can just call you Carme now! --(WT-en) Evan 09:16, 26 February 2007 (EST)

You have mail[edit]

Article history links[edit]

Hey there Evan, just noticing, when I do an edit comparison such as this that spans more than one edit it's only showing the last edit highlighted in red, where as it used to show everything (WT-en) - Cacahuate 23:57, 25 February 2007 (EST)

Yeah, I guess that's the new way that diffs are shown in MediaWiki. Is it important to change it to the old way? They're still highlighted with green background and yellow background, I think. --(WT-en) Evan 09:12, 26 February 2007 (EST)
I much preferred the old way... maybe I'm just not seeing it yet, but sometimes it seems to highlight in green/yellow somewhat randomly... or maybe if someone moves text to/from a section. But much easier to patrol when the changes are bolded in red... though if it's impossible or hugely difficult to change, I think I'll live :) (WT-en) - Cacahuate 03:49, 27 February 2007 (EST)

When were you guys stopping over in Cincinnati? -- (WT-en) Sapphire(Talk) • 16:37, 26 February 2007 (EST)

Mist! I forgot to talk to you about that. We bought a house (http://evan.prodromou.name/images/4690ruePontiac.jpg) and we're going to be closing on it at the end of March. So we decided to fly down to Austin instead of driving (so we could be back in time). So we won't be coming through Cincy on this trip. But we're going to do a roadtrip sometime this summer, and we'll probably swing through then. --(WT-en) Evan 17:02, 26 February 2007 (EST)
Also, could I ask that you restore the MediaWiki:Spamblacklist and MediaWiki:Spamwhitelist on pl and eo. I've asked Ricardo (Rmx) to restore the templates on pt. I haven't bothered to go through the other wikis and check.

Mayday...[edit]

Hi Evan - I am a contributor in wikivoyage/it (Ub). I just logged in there, and I saw a vandal had pillaged the HP. No big deal, I could rollback, but then I saw that the page Milan was redirected to Siena... again no big deal? no : this time the history was deleted, and there is a permanent background text I cannot delete via rb. Can you help? First would be denying access to "Dead" and his sockpuppets (Probably Mooo Hay" and others) banning the IP for life, I would say. Ola Evan, Numerous pages on the NL site cannot be marked as patrolled, leaving me with red exclamation marks o the recent changes page. Is this a common problem? Yikes, another one, not sure what the problem is here, but I can't create pages over there... when I search for the article I want, all that comes up is this, which gives no link for creating the page. I'm on a mac with OS10.4.9... using Safari. Firefox doesn't support the Hindi script, so can't try that. Any thoughts? If you want to try it yourself, try creating संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका (USA).
