Hello, Philippe (WMF)! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub.

Hi Philippe, i don't know if you regularly reading your talk page at WV, so i added the standard welcome with the most obvious link. I'm not a wikipedian and therefore one of the admins that is not used to the whole Wiki style of policies and currently a bit overwhelmed by all the new stuff you guys are adding. The former WT janitor preferred to use a very direct way of talking. For polite Americans this might be bordering sometimes on brashnees. I accept that WMF/Wkipedia has a different style but sometimes things need to be made clear. I therefore would like to know if you wrote me a message because you think my style was not appropriate and/or my actions. Regards, Jan aka Jc8136 (talk) 08:43, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
HI Jan, it wasn't a style issue at all - I honestly didn't agree with the action.  :) Philippe Beaudette, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 01:44, 13 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Legal requirement[edit]

Hi Philippe. Thanks for the heads up on the policy page about the legally required disclaimer. I would like to know if we are required to post the same on other language versions. Any guidance? Texugo (talk) 02:17, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikivoyage logo on maps[edit]

I just made my first map and decided to place the Wikivoyage logo on it. See: File:Lake Alfred Wikivoyage Map.png. Before making more maps in a similar style, is the use of the Wikivoyage logo and trademark disclaimer ok? Does any other words or symbols need to be added? AHeneen (talk) 17:23, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AHeneen - I am not a lawyer, I just play one online.  :-) I'd strongly suggest emailing legal@wikimedia.org and asking them.  :-) Philippe Beaudette, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 09:56, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hey AHeneen, I am also not a lawyer and (usually) only play one online but I do work with our trademarks a fair bit because of our merchandise and am known to be both opinionated and picky about their use. My personal opinion has generally been that general non commercial use by community members to show that something is from/related to the projects is totally cool and the maps are a great idea. I think the notice you have there (especially with the link to the trademark policy) really helps and while they may want a little tm symbol on it they probably should be fine otherwise.
That said I agree with Philippe that emailing legal would be best, if you can copy me in at jalexander@wikimedia.org that would be great too because I'd like to work with them to finalize it as a more concrete policy on what is allowed. We are already planning on a more clear rewrite of the policy and so this is a perfect opportunity to try to figure out what we want to make sure we allow.
