Understand

Hietzing a residential area which used to be a village once, but gained importance as the Schönbrunn Palace, was erected nearby. A very beautiful area for a stroll among old villas. From the center of Vienna it is located to the West along the Wien River. Hietzing has around 3/4 of its surface classified as greenspace including the Lainzer Tiergarten. During the Second World War, the district sufered smaller bomb damage since it has no major industries or railway stops. The public Austrian TV and radio station ORF has it's headquarters on the Küniglberg.

Get in

From the center the underground line U4 runs to Hietzing. The district is also deserved by the trams 10, 58 and 60, plus the suburban trains S3 and S15. Most of Hietzing is walkable, but might be hilly too.

Neptune Fountain

• 1 Schönbrunn Palace (Schloss Schönbrunn), Hietzing (U4 get off at Schönbrunn, tram, take 10, 58 detrain at Schönbrunn, 10A bus and alight at Schönbrunn). Apr—Jun 08:30–17:30, Jul—Aug 08:30-18:30, Sep—Oct 08:30-17:30, Nov—Mar 08:30–17:00. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996. It is the ultimate palace experience in Vienna, because the Habsburg summer palace can be found here. It is comparable in grandeur to Versailles and is definitely a must-see in Vienna. The palace has seen its fair share of excitement over the years, including a meeting between John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khruschchev at the height of the cold war. There are two possible tours available, the Imperial Tour showing 22 rooms and the Grand Tour showing 40 rooms. The shorter tour takes you into the west wing including the apartments of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi), as well as the imposing state rooms in the central wing. With the Grand Tour you can also visit the 18th-century rooms from the time of Maria Theresa. No photos, video taping, or backpacks allowed inside. The palace is wheelchair-accessible.   • 3 Schönbrunn Zoo (Tiergarten Schönbrunn), Maxingstraße 13b, ☏ +43 1 877 92 94-0, fax: +43 1 877 96 41, office@zoovienna.at. Daily Nov-Jan 09:00-16:30, Feb 09:00-17:00, Mar 09:00-17:30, Apr-Sep 09:00-18:30, Oct 09:00-17:30. The oldest zoo in the world, built for Maria Theresa's husband in 1752.   • 4 Schönbrunn Park (Schlosspark). Daily, gates open Apr-Oct 06:00, Nov-Mar 06:30; gates close at sundown (varies by month). A Baroque garden which has remained fundamentally unaltered since it first opened to the public in 1779, and popular for locals. Highlights include the Gloriette, offering grand views over the gardens, a children's Maze (Irrgarten) and Labyrinth, and the Crown Prince Garden (Privy Garden or Kronprinzengarten). Free, except for the Gloriette, Maze/Labyrinth, and Crown Prince Garden (€2.20-€4.50). 

• 5 Hermesvilla, Lainzer Tiergarten, Hietzing, ☏ +43 1 804 13 24, office@wienmuseum.at. Mar-Oct T-Su and holidays 10:00-18:00. A late 19th-century palace in the Lainzer Tiergarten, a wooded area formerly used for hunting by the Habsburg family. The imperial apartments with their furnishings have been preserved, and feature murals by prominent Viennese artists of the day, including Franz Matsch, Hugo Charlemont, Georg und Gustav Klimt. The palace is now also used as a venue for special exhibits. €6 (adults), €4 (seniors, students, Vienna Card), free (children and youth under 19), free the first Sunday of every month.

A special rail station built in 1899 for the exclusive use of the Emperor and members of his court, now atop the U4 subway stop. €4 (adults), €3 (seniors, students, Vienna Card), free (children and youth under 19), free the first Sunday of every month. 
• 7 Werkbundsiedlung Wien, Woinovichgasse, Hietzing (Ober Sankt Veith U4, bus 54B direction Stock im Weg, get off at Veitingergasse, between Jagdschlossgasse and Veitingergasse). Inspired by the Weißenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart and initiated by architect Josef Frank, the Werkbundsiedlung public estate housing project in the Lainz Municipality of Hietzing was built from 1930 to 1932 by numerous national and international architects of the time (amongst those famous names like Adolf Loos and Gerrit Rietvelt) and has fine examples of Bauhaus style architecture. This public estate housing complex consisted of 76 buildings of which 32 still exist.

Klimt Villa

• 8 Hietzinger Cemetery (Hietzinger Friedhof), Hietzing (near the Schönbrunn Schlosspark). Many prominent Viennese from the 18th to the 20th centuries are buried here, including the playwright Franz Grillparzer, painter Gustav Klimt, architect Otto Wagner, and modern composer Alban Berg. Free.

The painter Gustav Klimt used this villa as a studio from 1911 until his death in 1918. The studio has been carefully reconstructed using old photographs, and other rooms in the villa have displays about Klimt's models and clients. €10 (adults), €8 (concessions).

Hietzinger Pfarrkirche

• 10 Hietzinger Pfarrkirche, Am Platz. Dating back to the 15th century, the church was destroyed in the Turkish war of 1685 and was rebuilt in the Baroque style.

Various, but usually mid Feb-mid Nov 08:00-17:00. A beautiful nature reserve which was once the Emperor's private hunting wood; on the grounds is the Hermesvilla, the favorite mansion of Empress Elisabeth. It has several 2-10 km hiking trails. Nowadays the major part of the park is closed in the winter time, but in summer you can see wild pigs, deer, and many Viennese families. You can see the animals get fed at 14:00 every day. Ask any park attendant where the location is.

• 3 Bikepath Vienna river (Wienfluss Radweg) (U4 Hietzing). on day light. A short ride of 7km is available without any traffic crossings.

• Hietzinger Hauptstrasse (U4 Kennedy Brücke). Some shops and a post office are found along the Hietzinger Hauptstrasse.
