Sainte-Anne is a small city on the Grande-Terre Island, the eastern wing of the main Guadeloupe island. Among the most touristic places in Guadeloupe, it offers all kinds of facilities and boast great sandy beaches lined with palm trees.

Understand[edit]

Plage de la caravelle

Sainte-Anne is now one of the three largest seaside resorts in Guadeloupe. It was founded by Capuchin monks, and was just a small fishing village 19 km from Pointe-a-Pitre. First written sources mention a chapel near the place where the church stands today. In 1759 the place was destroyed by English soldiers. A city administration had only existed since 1837.

Between 1870 and 1940 there were 34 factories in the area, the densest concentration of sugar processors on the island. Two beautiful, reef-protected sandy beaches with shady coconut palms made it a tourist destination after the sugar cane crisis. The first hotels were built in 1970.
