Museumsquartier[edit]

Museumsquartier (MQ) (lit. "quarter of museums") has been serving as a cultural district of Vienna since 2001. Though many museums and cultural institutions are situated there, it is not only a place for art, but also an urban living space which people visit to spend some time, sitting in one of the cafés or perhaps playing boccia. It is also popular to meet friends for a BYOB evening here, wonderful on summer evenings; buy something to eat and drink at a supermarket and join the others on the grass. The big yard is filled with large fiberglass sofas you can use for free. Optionally, you can buy drinks at the open air bars there. Just ask for a glass you can take away so you can use the sofas. If you are interested in visiting a couple of these museums, combination tickets available at the MQ entrance will be cheaper than buying them individually at museum entrances. You can use free wifi at MQ provided by Quintessenz.

Bars[edit]

Jazz performance at the Rote Bar

Sleep[edit]

Choosing to stay in Neubau brings you conveniently close to the Innere Stadt, in the proximity of the Museumsquartier and on your way from the Westbahnhof if you plan on arriving by train. The general rule is that the closer to the Museumsquartier (i.e. the more to the Center), the more expensive the rooms.

Budget[edit]

Mid-range[edit]

  • 2 [dead link] K+K Maria Theresia, Kirchberggasse 6, +43-1-521 23, fax: +43-1-521 23-70, . Offers a gourmet breakfast buffet. Overall, this is a good choice both for a business traveler and for a family with a toddler; comfortable for non-smokers. Heated floors in bathroom. Rooms are modern and each has a full tea set, wired internet in every room, electronic safe box, hairdrier, minibar. Small sauna adjoining a tiny gym open until at least 23:00. Breakfast from 06:30. On the downside, few steps to overcome to get to the hotel with a stroller. Regular doubles around €125 through frequently available special offers, €145+ as rack rates.
  • 3 Falkensteiner Hotel am Schottenfeld, Schottenfeldgasse 74, +43 1 5265181. The hotel's contemporary design is a refreshing departure from the usually stodgy appearance of most Viennesse hotels. Be mindful when booking a suite – some of them come with steeply sloping roofs.
  • 4 Arcotel Wimberger Wien, Neubaugürtel 34-36. A surprisingly ordinary hotel from a chain priding itself in adding a designer touch to its properties. What matters, however, is that the (quite awfully decorated) rooms close to the Westbahnhof can be had for a reasonable price, and the service level is good for Vienna. €74.
  • 5 InterCityHotel Wien, Mariahilfer Strasse 122 (corner of Kaiserstrasse). The InterCityHotel chain, a part of the German Steigenberger Group, focuses on hotels right next to train stations. This particular one is a block away from Westbahnhof, but still offers all the usual amenities, including a free all-day ticket for public transit. The decor is simple but modern and tasteful, especially for Viennesse standards. Some more expensive Business Plus rooms feature terraces with a view over the rooftops of Vienna. €76.
  • 6 NH Wien City, Mariahilfer Straße 32-34. NH brings the peace of mind by offering predictability of the chain's usual standards. Of note is the generous size of rooms (25m²), unusual for Vienna, as well as the fact that all of them are equipped with a kitchenette. €94.
  • 7 NH Collection Wien Zentrum, Mariahilfer Straße 78, +43 1 5245600, . Check-in: 15:00, check-out: 12:00. If the large rooms of the NH Wien City are still not enough for you, the chain's other property down the road offers suites of 35-50m² at similar prices.

Splurge[edit]

  • 8 [formerly dead link] 25hours Hotel beim MuseumsQuartier, Lerchenfelder Straße 1-3, +43 1 521510, . The Viennese foothold of the outlandish designer hotel chain spanning the German-speaking countries, with a rooftop terrace bar so popular that even staying guests may find it hard to get in. The location between university campuses and the Museumsquartier helps enhance the artsy/cultural/intellectual setting.
  • 9 Hotel Sans Souci, Burggasse 2, +43 1 522 25 20, . Opened in December 2012, Hotel Sans Souci Wien is right across from the Museum Quarter and a 5-minute walk from the Ringstraße. The large spa area includes an indoor pool. Free Wi-Fi is available.

Connect[edit]

  • MQ. There is free wireless coverage in the interior of the Museumsquartier. Useful on sunny and warm days, when one can sit on the outdoor benches called Enzis.
Main Public Library (Hauptbücherei)

Cope[edit]

  • 1 Main Public Library (Hauptbücherei), Urban-Loritz-Platz 2a (directly above U6 station Burggasse-Stadthalle, in the middle of the Gürtel), +43 1 4000-84500. M-F 11:00-19:00, Sa 11:00-17:00. Opened in 2003 and designed by architect Ernst Mayr, this was the winner of an EU-wide design competition. The collection includes over 300,000 books, audiovisual material, and other print media including over 600 newspapers. Free wi-fi is available to visitors with library cards.
